Hey guys, was just wondering, can anyone tell me, is it legal to have a 4 or 6 point roll cage in a road registred car?? ive heard you need to wear a helmet when driving a vehicle with a roll cage installed??

the DOT website has reference to any bars above or in front of your head not being legal but plenty have got 6 point cages complied so who knows really

Bars that interfere with your field of vision are the problem in 6 point cages.

ok, how do you go about getting mod plates in queensland? im from new south so we have to get ablie slip and engineer certificate. whats the deal in qld

the line in the dot stuff has reference to a racecar has forward bars but you are wearing a helmet so it wont matter if you hit your head on them

and if you think about it, in a regular seat, with a regular belt and no helmet, it's very easy to imagine that a 6 point cage makes the car LESS safe in most accidents, especially a sierra.

I've built a few cages but an internal 6 point isn't a great option in a sierra. they're just too small.

Rear 4 points are fine.

internal cages are very safe, just need to be wearing a helmet.

find an authorised modification approver, you can get a list from the DOT, and ask them about it. Only some will do it and some will be more stringent than others. It costs around $150 - $200 for the compliance of a 6 point because you have to get the cage complianced and the seating capacity changed back to a 2 seater rather than 4.

An exo is preferable if you want to try and prevent totalling the car in a lightish off road roll.

An internal cage is there to protect the driver (so long as they aren't killed by hitting it)

An external cage can save the car and prevent having to start all over again.

Yeah i got my exo blue plated along with a heap of other things and it cost $200. The only thing he picked me for is the front side rail bolts were hex heads and needed to be dome heads so they arnt sharp. To blue plate an exo in qld they need to be clamped to chassis not welded and tube needs to be at least 3mm thick

What are regulations in NSW regarding an exo cage. When people say that they're 'boat and ladder racks' are they for real? I should probably talk to an engineer, thought i would just get a quick yay or nay.

yeap, talk to an engineer or department of transport. You will get 10 different opinions from forums and none will hold up in court. Even DOT officers will disagree with each other, so best to get stuff in writing if that's what you're after.

I figured that i wouldnt be able to get a straight answer. ill have to visit an engineer for other planned mods so ill ask then.

I'd say most people never get hassled for their external Hill Hoists, so in that case i wouldn't worry about it, but if you really want to be legal then you should ask the officials.
