Better than laying under the car trying to figure out why the hubs aren't engaging. |

Vacuum hubs are the future... ...a frustrating dystopian future. The vac hubs in my Jimny never let me down and I appreciated the system. Maintenance is the keyword here. |

To elaborate on that for the OP. The actuator is in the hubs, the part the vacuum pulls on to lock the hubs in drive. There is a solenoid that controls the vacuum applied in the engine bay. Flashing 4wd light could mean all sorts of things and there is a list of troubleshooting in the FSM. You may also need to check for vacuum leaks in the system. Also note the Jimny needs vacuum to engage AND disengage the hubs. No vacuum pressure is needed to hold the hubs in the locked position. If all that sounds too difficult, do as the others have suggested and get manual hubs. |

Probably the easiest place to start is the hubs themselves. Put it in 4 high and take the covers off the hubs. You'll need a 12 point socket (10mm if I recall correctly) for the star shaped bolts around the hub. Once you have the cover off make sure the hub is greased and see if you can manually pop the sleeve out to engage the hubs. Do both sides and see if the light still flashes. If the inner workings of the hub aren't clean and greased properly the vacuum won't have enough pressure to engage them. If you manually engage/disengage them a couple of times and they still don't work normally you'll have to check the hoses and actuator. You'll need to take off the plastic guard inside the driver's side wheel arch above the tyre to see the receiver tank and lines in and out to the hubs. On the newer models there are some lines sort of under the battery, on the inside of the wheel arch. I assume the older ones are the same but I don't know for sure. At the end of the day if you're doing a lot of off-road work manual hubs are the way to go. Check out zukparts.com for the adaptor rings you'll to change over to manual hubs. |

on the inlet manifold there is a vacuum line with a little valve on it (blue iirc), it attaches toward the the middle of the inlet manifold, on the outer left hand side. maybe inspect this line for any cracks as it may be as simple as a vacuum leak. failing it being an easy fix i'd recommend potentially sourcing some vitara or sierra manual aisin hubs (along with their bolts) & some hub spacers from zukparts.com this way you don't really need to worry about future failures. |
