Post subject:  Bare minimum wire harness
I've had this Sierra/project for about 6 years and I've finally pulled my finger out to finish it.
What I need to know is...
Can anyone tell me if an sj70 Sierra can run without the emission control module, the fuel cutoff and idle out solenoids and carburetor solenoid, and anything else? Thanks.
I'm stripping as much of the wiring off as possible. The car will be run off-road only similar to a comp truck. It will only have white lights fitted.
I'll see if I can upload a picture of it to give you guys an idea.

So that's what became of Bushboy's Sierra?

Now a shooting rig?

You need the fuel cut solenoid powered. The other electrical bits on the carby can be disused but the idle up on headlights running is wise to keep IMO.

You probably only need them plus coil circuit, start circuit and oil and alternator warning lights are a pretty good idea.

Yes that's the plan for it. Its turning out to be a bit of a challenge with the offset seating position, but with perseverance and time it should come together.

Sierras have a pretty minimal wiring harness as it is. Whilst its easy enough to remove lighting circuits etc, there's very little in a sierra loom, engine side, that isn't there for function. Sure, you could ditch the emissions control unit (which in reality is just a very simple logic circuit that determines when to turn on the EGR) whether you keep it or not will make no difference to the function of the car but the consequences of ripping off, say, the idle up solenoid might be dire.

I reckon the easiest path is to retain everything. As I've said its neither a bulky or complex loom. It will make troubleshooting later much, much easier.

Thanks Steve.

I've managed to find a wiring diagram on the net and with it I used a process of elimination to remove wires that I won't be needing. I think I'm down to about six or seven core circuits. Like Reubs said...oil, water, alternator, idle up (which makes sense if I'm running lights), fuel cutoff, starter and ignition circuits.
