I just purchased a 2009 GV with J24B and 150,000 k's on clock. serviced regularly. The people I purchased it off have had a once off sudden heat increase and water loss. then have taken it to mechanic for diagnosing, and the mechanic has not taken any of the engine apart and came back to them saying it has a cracked block and needs new engine. I know these engines have a weakness for cracking blocks but the K's and suddenness of it all seem odd to me.
I drove it home(15mins) used 700ml water. mixing water with oil.
Any other possible causes? before I pull it down, and hope its just a headgasket.

Spot on, so after reading those forums, and confirmating it is a late 2008 manufacture, going to aim in the direction of a warped head, due to the amount of liquid lose.
note taken on thermostat ratings to. just wondering if the near freezing temps down here(TAS) at night have something to do with it, as I'd guess it has been garaged out side and then used first thing, probably without warming it up.

Interesting note that if it seems such a problem with heads in these earlier models why cant I seem to find any cylinder head assembly. (well easily I havnt started making any calls yet.) just would seem to me why go to effort of pulling, tested, machining, refiiting a head if its a dud anyhow..just a thought.

Brighter note, had a choice 18mths back wether go a diesel or J24B vitara for the missus and thought I was risking it by going the diesel, but so far its been spot on, good little engine.

My guess is cost. http://www.megazip.net/zapchasti-dlya-avtomobilej/suzuki/grand-vitara-8578/jb424w-18239/jb424w-my-09-10-325432/cylinder-head-3794568#/il-88746755

+ shipping + fitting out + installation. If the original head can be levelled I think the cost would come in under a full new replacement. Even a full engine transplant would probably be cheaper. Despite all their problems this model was very popular so engines or even just heads from wrecks are easy to source.

Just pray your sensors don't fail. Expensive little parts.

My research suggests its the 08-mid 09 J24s that have issues. I know Someone with a 2011 and it's never had an issue.

I haven't priced complete J24s but surely this could be an option?

I sold a rebuilt j24 the other day for $5500. Not bad considering a quick egay search was showing second hand engines from wrecks over the $5500 mark.

A certain suzuki wrecker in adelaide has 12 of the fucked motors in their racks! He said the amount of calls from around Australia chasing a good second hand one is alarming.

hey fellow zookers,

I have another cracked block to report, 2009 three door Gv with only 103,000 kms on it. Car has had a very easy life, always maintained does very little driving- Cant believe it, especially with such low mileage.

tossing up whether to replace the motor or just get rid of it, and buyer a later model GV.

What have other Zookers done?

Hi Happylad,

Sorry to hear you had this problem.

Check out this thread if you haven't already: there are a few people who have talked about what they did (including quite a few from Perth). Given the age now, you might not have much luck in claiming recompense, but you never know, given that it does appear to be a manufacturing flaw.

My daughter's 2010 2.4 GV has been off the road for months. Suzuki replaced the VVT unit, timing chain and tensioner in order to get the dreaded engine off. Shortly after, our story is the same as yours. We finally had our mechanic pull the engine down. Cracked cylinder head. Same place as predicted by on-line sources. Mechanic rebuilt the engine. Perfect...but engine light back on. The story continues.
Hoping that someone will start creating a database of all the examples of cracked cylinder heads for this motor in Australia.

You can add another one to the list. 2008 15700ks.
This is why you dont buy a car from another state sight unseen.
