Hi All,
just got a 2006 NGV prestige and want to get some bigger rubber. does anyone know what the max size is without lift or what can be fit with a 2inch (40mm)lift?

Was hoping for 245/70/17 on factory alloys :shocked: or could someone point me in the right direction.
Also can someone tell me who they have used in the past for some cheap tyre options.

i will be using the car for 90% towing a boat and sand driving to get to sandy fishing spots. There will be the occasional bush bash here and there.

Mud terrains look cool 8) but prob not necessary so unless i get get real good ones for cheap prob steer away from this option.

AT options and brands people have used in the past or are currently using would be appreciated.

Budget is $200 per tyre but you may be able to talk me into more.

Have been offered at set of new Dick Cpeks for $1000 for 4. is this the best option should i do it?

Adelaide based if anyone "knows a guy" or has a hook up

Never buy tyres because they look cool. Buy the right tyres for the job.

245 70 17 will fit with lift and without lift depending on offset of the rim. I also have factory alloys and run 245 75 16 and are fine. Minimal rub on full lock. I currently have cooper st's that i got 100000k's out of. They were 300 each though. 4 years ago

If you're towing, get road tyres. They will last longer and drive FAR better. They'll work fine in sand if you air down.

Price up Toyo AT's. I've had them and for the price they work well, wear well and last ages.

I'm not all that happy with the wet grip of mine, (I'm not alone) I do agree they wear very well though.

My hankook dynapro mt are quieter than alot of all terrains and wear awsome. Had bighorn mt 245/75r16 on the gv and they were brilliant but noisy as. Keep in mind all terrains are unuseable in mud/slippery tracks but mud terrains normally excel in all terrain types if only slightly more noisy onroad

I personally hate the term "all terrain" personally, I think a swamper is an "all terrain tyre" and a Krawler is a "summer tyre" to say nothing of sizes. A 35 12.5 is a summer size in my opinion, where a 34 9.5 is a winter size.

So a tall narrow tyre might be more of an "all terrain" tyre than a wide tyre which will be more of a summer tyre even with the same tread pattern.

How can a tyre that's useless when it's muddy be called "all terrain"- maybe they should be called "dry terrain" tyres.

As long as all of the terrain that you drive on is Bitumen, Gravel and Sand; then ATs are All Terrain.... :D



Though saying that, my ATZ P3s have been going pretty good in the little bits of mud that I haven't been able to avoid recently.

Firstly thanks for the feed back. I would prefer not to get just a road tyre as i do try to go off roading but as i said mostly use the car to tow a boat but will be using it off road here and there. Sounds like a decent "AT" is the way to go. 245 70 17 on standard wheels seem like a winner too. Ill shop around for a more decent brand. Anyone used maxis tyres or are they rubbish?

Maxxis are good but now overpriced in my opinion, there are better at's on the market. Micket t probably make the only true all terrain on the market, noisier than most mt's

yeah my mate has mickeys on his and they have worn really well. i'm not too overly concerned with road noise unless its way too loud.

I went with 245/70 17 on my gv in the general grabber a/t's. Seem pretty good, and have just clocked up 10,0000km on them.

Have you done much 4wding in them? Been offered Pirelli Scorpion ATR's for 200 a pop. Seems like a good tyre from reviews apart from the odd person here and there seems like most people are happy with their wear however its mixed with their off road performance.

I have Bridgestone dular ATs in LT construction on my family car and they are a great tyre however they are pretty
much a HT tyre that doesn't fall to bits on gravel roads.

The koyo KL71s on my jimny are proving to be a good tyre as well and are a mud tyre.

I've gotta say; I'm happy as a pig in mug with my Goodrich AT's and so far, touch wood, mud hasn't been a problem. They self clean well enough and are quiet on road with stacks of grip dry or wet. If I had to fault them I'd say they are a bit hard, but what LT isn't??

Mine has Michelin 245/70/17 tyres on factory alloys (as purchased) and I can't even hear the vehicle on the road.

If you are going to be towing a boat, go for AT's. If you are going to drive on sand, go for (lower air pressure) AT's. If you want to hear nothing but road noise, but drive in mud, go the MT's.

Tyres are a personal choice, but should be chosen with the job in mind.

Does anyone ever read the posts from the op? He doesnt want to spent the cash that the tyres sone of you are posting and the fact some of the tyres don't come in the size he is after.

We went off-topic a bit and started discussing the merit of what the tyre industry defines "AT" versus what we personally consider an "AT"... it's still sort of relevant to the OP.

These rock in sand from what I have seen, but never owned.

Hankook ATM RF10 are hard to go past for the cash. Yokohama geolander AT's are very popular in sand here, they bag really well and a very quiet on road. Some people claim they are the best in sand after trying a few different options. Pretty cheap option also.

The Grabber SRLs are incredible on all dry surfaces (sand, rocks, gravel, and especially road) - Wet road they are incredible compared to muddies. Mud... meh. They're not muddies. They are only marginally worse than BFG KM2 in mud. my Kumho KL71 are incredible in all of the above, not so much wet roads but given the price difference i'll run KL71 full time once the SRLs lose a bit more tread and i sell them. The SRL are also a VERY heavy tyre compared to the KL71.

thanks for the feedback,i don't mind stretching the budget a little but dont want to spend 300 a tyre. i had KL71's on my old 99 GV that i just sold and they were okay but had terrible road noise. There have been some good suggestions made.
I'm pretty certain i wont get mud tyres as that is just something i do on the odd occasion but as said 90% towing and sand driving. Looks like i'll just head to a couple of tyre shops and see whats there for roughly the money i have to spend. ill look at some of the suggestions you guys put forward.

I had a second hand set of dualler at's as above look pretty much like highway tyre but with a squarer side lug, and I was allways very impressed with them, they preformed better than they should have off road and were nice and quite abd smooth.
