Post subject:  Tray back vs full bodied lwb

Hey guys, just trying to think of the pros and cons of each, comparing a full bodied lwb with a maruti cab to a Suzuki lwb ute.
Obviously the full bodied has more room in the cab than the ute, but the ute is less prone to dents, F/B has lower COG but ute can be made lower etc, etc.
Can anyone think of other pros and cons of each, regarding both hard core 4wding and touring, thanks :peaceout:

Ive had many of both
The wellbody is great for touring and daily stuff especially with a canopy and can still do reasonably hard stuff but the trayback is really the pick for harder stuff and gives alot more freedom for rear susp mods being able to remove the tray.
Alliy tray would be around 70-80kg heavier than the wellbody

I have a maruti ute cab i will likely swap onto my chassis in the future for a season of harder stuff

Tray back is great for throwing fishing gear on the back and hitting up the beach. For touring, why not pop a frame and canvas canopy on!!

Negatives, if your taller than 4 ft 2 then the seat will be far too close to the steering wheel. You get used to it but it's an issue. Perhaps Maruti affords better space, but the stockman is definitely cramped.

Well body LWB, can have two seats in the back that fold up to create more space!! Anything in the back affords some pseudo security of the fact it's in the car and not 'on' the tray. For whatever that's worth.

You can take your pick of fibreglass canopy, canvas or vinyl soft top.

Which is better? Take your pick.

Better for 4wding? Not sure either is better IMO. Dents, you'll get a fair share on both.

What do you want to carry? Consider how many people you may want to pack tightly in, 2 vs 4. If your running an Engle or weather sensitive good then you've either got to run a frame with canvas canopy or a well body with a cover

Your pick. Suggest you have a good look and drive of others and see what you prefer.

This example i was with 2 traybacks that just bashed into the rock with there trays and kept going. I backed out because panel carnage was iminent

I have a full body lwb because...I like the style. I like having the option to pull the roof off and change the roof around. (not that i do much)

The dislikes of full body? The bum is a bit long and taillights are consumable. My fault though by trying to keep it looking more sierra...I've also bent my rear 1/4's on trees and rocks as i built it to do the harder stuff.

I could probably own either LWB and make it to suit what i need out of it, Its really up to you? What you choose now, You may want to change it later anyway depending on how life turns out.
