Ive got a 97 Coliy and the carb is sucking in too much air and running rubbish. don't want to pay the $550 for a recon carb would rather invest the money in an upgrade. Ive seen a bit about SPI conversions, I'm just questioning if its worth the investment. Was just wondering if anyone had repurposed something out of another car, or had a good alternative to the normal carb. I don't want to do an engine conversion, too much hassle and I'm happy with the little 1.3 (unless you've got a bolt in diesel conversion you wanna let me borrow ) Thanks for your thoughts. |

Corolla 4k carbys are good manual choke and less vacuum lines and stuff to go wrong |

I used the 1600 swift toilet bowl injection system on a 1300 before. Once warm it ran like a champ, heaps of power and really consistant, never died on angles and wasn't bad at all. But the reason the next owner got rid of it was cause, cold start was set by the ECU so it thought it was on a cold 1600 motor and it flooded it unless you held your foot down a bit so the butterlfy could cope with some more air in the system. So it never ran real good until it was up to temp, in which case the ECU switches over to 02 sensor and runs really well. 2ndly is it back fired every now and again going down hill, which is fine in the mountains but in town its pretty loud and frightening haha I would just do a 1600 swap. No fiddling around. Everything runs sweet. More power |

Or a g13bb. Plenty of people have played with various TBI injection systems on sierra G13's over the years. I think you have to be peculiarly interested in troubleshooting to bother. Considering you need to do nearly all of the same wiring and an EFI fuel system, it seems like a no brainer to bolt in a newer, more powerful motor at the same time. |

I vote to fix the carb properly. No hassles. Should go great for years. I've been down that road myself. If an engine conversion is too much hassle then a non-factory SPI conversion would be too much as well? |

The hassle of a 1.6 conversion isn't the problem it's the money I'm not keen on spending, I've had a look and it'll cost a few grand to do the conversion properly and a lot of down time for my only car. I've not got any experience with any kind of conversions. I figure if I'm going to spend the 550 to have a stock setup again I would rather go bigger and better for the same (ish) price. How much would a corolla carby set me back? What are the pros and cons. I've read about the Webber carbs not being great on hills, would have have the same problem with the Corolla ? |

You will spend nearer 1K on a TBI unit, adapters, wiring, 02 sensors, frigging around it took me a few months and i never wired anything myself. GTI conversion or a G13bb will cost the same and take the same time. The cheapest and most effective thing to do is a carby rebuild. 4K are a simplified Aisin carby. Less vac hoses and a manual choke. I loved mine in my KE70, but never tried to swap it into a sierra. I vote rebuild carb |

Brand new 4k carbs are $180 on eBay, I'd go in that direction. They're basically a sierra carb with slightly bigger throats and a manual choke. |

Probably time i should speak up Brand new suzuki sierra manual choke aisin style carbs are also on ebay. Look up mitsibishi 4g32 carburetor, unlike 4k carbs the primary/secondary barrels match the suzuki intake off the top of my head its something like 28mm/32mm as opposed to 30mm/30mm, that and from memory the secondary is mechanical linkage Just need to swap over a few of the 'suzuki' configuration bits over from old carb -Throttle cable holder bracket - Throttle bracket -sierra jets & venturi's ((1.6l mistu way too rich) -fuel cut solonoid -fuel line nipple (optional) Best bet is to also buy an indian carburetor rebuild kit. I specify this cause they have idle jet screw and spare jets and other bits that are missing from the aussie seller kits like fuel miser. The gaskets on the china-carb are real thin and strongly recommend swapping in the thicker bit. Also i have found the best jetting to be 99/115 on 1.3L (99/105 stock) have gone up to 141 on secondary and experimented with upping the primary Known about the 4g32 for a little over a year was sitting on it to evaluate one and possibly do converted carbs for sale in low volume. Decided its not worth it.  Was planning on doing a write up and guide on the whole process later this month along with a step by step on tuning a aisin carb etc
