Hi All,

I've boldly taken the valve covers off my recently acquired GV XL-7 with the H27A v6 to rectify an oil leak onto the passenger side exhaust. I have tracked the source of an oil leak to a small box that protrudes from the rear (firewall) end of the passenger side head, behind where the valve cover ends. My Suzuki manual refers to this component as the 'LH bank exhaust camshaft holder', and sure enough, the far left camshaft protrudes beyond the head into this box.

I tried removing the 3 visible bolts, but I can't seem to move this box. Has anyone else experienced an oil leak in this location and any suggestions?

The two blue circles are actually circling different things - in the picture, what you have circled is the cam position sensor - which I believe is held by two bolts, and you might want to mark the position before removal, - in the diagram, the circled part is the cam holder, which is held, I believe by two bolts and two studs/nuts - and in your picture one bolt and one stud/nut appear to be still in place.

Next - the leak probably has nothing to do with the cam holder, it's either an O-ring on the camp position sensor mount, or, a seal within the sensor housing.

Fordem, you're a legend for clarifying this oil leak. Agreed it looks like a leaky seal at the CMP. I found another forum with a clear photo from the firewall side of the CMP - http://www.suzuki-forums.com/2g-1999-20 ... aft-2.html. I understand the requirement to note the position, then check my timing after.

Now to find a funky star bit to undo those CMP nuts! Thanks! :P

Humble update, I found no oil leaks around the valve covers, no valve clearance to check, and of course the double row timing chain was in perfect order. I did manage to get the CMP out via a Torx T30 bit, and changed its o ring.

Upon replacing the o2 sensors and spark plugs, then reassembling the injectors and top end, the idle was unsteady and the 2.7 v6 is gutless! I know when I'm defeated, so took my xl7 to the local mechanic, who is still yet to find the problem. He replaced the injector seals, checked compression, tried blanking egr, checked fuel pressure. All good but the car runs bad. Any suggestions?

OK, the legends at BAM Garage, Morningside Qld fixed it. Turns out I installed a slightly longer bolt at the base of the CMP, leaving a 5mm gap at the base of the CMP. It could only be seen with a mirror from underneath. Now with the new O ring seal and the CMP sitting flush, new O2 sensors and spark plugs, my XL7 runs like a dream - smooth and responsive. I've learnt my lesson, this is a tedious little v6 that I am leaving to the experts from now on!
