So not long ago changed over the engine in the ute. She blew the pistons on the first one and so we have chucked another 1lt in. Since then, Its been running like a pig on the first run.. You can hear the thing spitting and missing on power down. Choke helps a little but not that much, It WAS like that for the first 15/20mins each day then would be not too bad.. I took the air intake pipe off the carby and rev'd put the hand over and then cupped the intake, drew a fair amount of fuel and not much grit/dirt. Changed the fuel filter and this made zero difference.. What is annoying however, is sometimes after a run.. you can let the engine sit for say three hours, will get cold .. then will start first time and not miss a trick. But since doing the fuel filter, on the first run and almost for an hour (or until i get where im going) she misses and farts and pings.. Almost sounds like a rock hitting the lid of the bonnet sometimes.. sharp ping.. Also, She is now loosing all power when she misses, power down clutch fully out and ZERO power like you have put your foot back on the clutch. Enough to jolt your body forward.. I give it heaps of revs and she will go again, then next time (stop and go) say at lights, same thing.. power down.. move then BAM complete loss of drive and movement.. Again clutch in, rev the bollocks of it.. and she goes.. Its extremely dangerous as I almost got cleaned up today when I pulled out of a junction with plenty of time, but lost all power and stalled right in the middle of the road.. Shit my pants and almost flooded the engine getting back going.. Thing is im conscious of revving the bollocks off it and stressing the engine .. Carby? What to-do next please guys Cheers |

also add that the is an audible sound of spitting, like a sprinkler chocking/limiting out water.. if that makes any sense.. The power through gears is extremely laboured .. |

Ok, so you have changed the engine recently? Where did the engine external components come from? did the carby and ignition system come from the old motor, or are you running the carby and ignition system that came with the new one? |

still points? chuck some new ones and new condensor in, make sure the plug gaps arent closed up its easy to bump on putting them in, make sure the leads are ok, make sure the dwell is even and not moving around, make sure the dizzy isnt worn and floating then rebuild the carby, sorta sounds like a accelerator pump thing or air leak |

i weas thinking air leak, try checking around the inlet and carby mounts for leaks with some WD or soapy water. i am definately not a zook expert but i did have heaps of dattos years ago that would do similiar things and it was always an air leak or even what royce said, check the points and maybe even replace them and the condensor. i used to carry a spare set of points in the glove box for this reason |

íf its still a points engine then elimnate it rather than replace it, later model 1l did not use points and there is a threAD on lj10.com how the use 1.3l dizzy to replace point on lj80's definately would be replacing everything igniition wise and resetting the timing and idle once the engine is WARM |

i also forgot to ask, how is the clutch? my clutch as gripping when cold and after a while it started slipping, some days i had power other days i was putting it in low range to climb a a hill and couldnt rev it pass 4000rpm if i wanted to move at all what octane are you running and have you tried swithching petrol stations, it doesnt matter where in sydney i am filling up at a shell station loses me power and fuel economy (i keep testing this out when i am in a new region, like camden or hornsby same results) |

Right, So an update.. Spent all day on her today.. Changed All Spark Plugs- Leads to and from dizzy Points in the Dizzy New Oil and Filter Running.. OK.. Still missing or doing this noise like popcorn cooking when its (power off) running down into idle.. I went through a caryard on the way home and looked at a new ute. I can get 3k trade in and its looking a mighty nice option right about now.. Cheers for the advice.. Going to see what she is like cold start in the morning.. If its the same.. I think i'm just going to bite the bullet and get rid of her.. I just dont have the time of inclination to spend on her that she needs.. |

have you checked the timing. I have a 1 litre and mine was badly down on power, points gap was on bugger all so I reset it, which affected the timing so then I had a bad flat spot. I reset the timing and the idle on the carb. runs sweet now. dont give up on yours, they're pretty simple engines and carbys to work on, persevere with it. oh, another thought, bad fuel...... how long has it been happenning? just on this tank or for a few tankfuls? to eliminate fuel, disconnect fuel supply hose off fuel pump and start the engine and run it until it stalls. then connect a hose to the fuel pump supply and into a jerry can of fresh fuel. start it up and see how it runs. |

No, didnt change it mate. Spoke to a few peeps including my old man (Mechanic) and he didnt think it was necessary.. however that might of been a mistake?.. I have discovered tonight that the exhaust has a leak in the first muffler.. The ute is much more noisy from that spot, could a poorly or broken exhaust system be a possible cause? |

sound like you car is pinging from lean fuel mix. if the idle is still all over the place my bet its got crap in the carby from before you changed the filter or water in the tank. water in the fuel is a easy fix, just put a cup of methol in a full tank and it will clear up all the water in the system. crap in the carby is a rebuild. its the only way to make sure its right. |

Condensors arent usually a service item, but when you have a missfire you cant put your finger on it pays to bung a new one in to be sure FWIW I have only ever seen one cause a problem, was my car too, after I went through everything else |

Yeah idle isnt that bad really, once she is warm.. My old man wondered if it could be a coil? Going to run through a check list again later. *just took her for a spin to the shops, obviously cold now ran as bad if not worse than before* Back to the drawing board. Fuel wise, She gets whatever is cheapest, sadly that's based on my budget right now, usually GULL or Shell fuel.. Unleaded.. Can see how water got into the tank, but I guess anything is possible.. Jeeze its F***ing annoying mind! Cheers for your help so far boys.. Dave. |

wind the idle mixture right up and see if it takes off a bit better, might be a dodgy accelerator pump |

i guess at timing being up the shit. maybe the ignition timing is ok but if the belt is out one tooth is will be low on power also. check the ignition timing and if that is ok then take the timing cover off and check your TDC between the crank and cam wheels. I had an engine with a similar problem in an escort. would run but had no guts. ended up bein the timing belt out a tooth. fixed that and it flew. |

The other question I was going to ask, I know alot of guys swap their 1.3 carbs to the vitara's Can you do that one the F10A? |

that video is normal for the choke not being on enough and not enough fast idle if it runs out of poke when warm and you finally get up to speed perhaps look at the fuel pump |

Can you do that one the F10A? F10A runs totally different carb setup (sidedraught) so no it wont fit. But on the other hand there are alot of sidedraught motorcycle carbs out there Dan |

Cool, cheers Dan. Royce.. Would it explain that pinging on the video about 1.50 in.. almost sounds like an electrical pop, I think its a misfire from the carby?? That is what worrys me the most really, well that and the misfire / crap power in fourth. |

backfore like that is from too lean a mixture, when accelerating you need more fuel, that what the aaccel pump does, when cold you need even more fuel, thats what the choke does stick a 1.5" SU on it |

stick a 1.5" SU on it Cool, will look into that this weekend.. 1.5" SU?? - What is that exactly? haha I'm looking at just buying a kit and get the existing one serviced.. Most likely cheaper id say! |

Fairly sure they are all good mate, Going to triple check everything again.. Just out of interest.. SU carby - What are they worth.. Found one online, its like 25yrs old.. but in good nick and cheap! are they are easy bolt on for a F10A? - Highly unlikely to get one, but just curious? |

there are heaps around mini forums, about $50 to buy, about $60 to replace every single part in them you would need an adaptor plate to fit it and maybe fiddle with the cables but there is no other carby anywhere that more people have experience with and the options on needles is massive no angle problems either |

I was a roadservice tech for many years and was caught out once by this, but never again. Took me a couple of hours to diagnose. Just change the condensor, and if it fixes the problem, great, if not, well at least you can rule it out. |
