i have a g16 sierra with the stock radiator and the biggest thermo i
could find that fitted. no problems with getting hot, will be doing
the same with my other sierra. oh and the days are still over 30 deg
in the middle of winter.

hey guys just did a quick search and found nothing. has any one ditched the fan on a 1.3L serria, and put a themo on? if so wat size and how did it go. i have no reason to do this unless there will be a benifit thanks aaron |

no not really, sierras arent designed to pull air in without the fan vitara fan is a good upgrade |

i ran a thermo onmy zook for a few years and it worked well. it gave the engine a bit more response but it also put more strain on the alt. I replaced 2 alts in one year. it had other benifits as i could switch it off when doing water crossings and the like. The main reason i ditched it was it failed on me when out in the bush. Too many bog holes had filled it with crap and the motor just stopped. so i was stuck with a massive hill to winch up with no cooling. after an hour of pulling the fan apart i got it going again but it was only at half speed. It also used alot of power the winch required. I went back to the stock fan and that was alot better. Since the new engine went in i now run a clutch fan. B4T |

i have just put an 14" fan on my 1.3 , i did have an 10" fan just avter playing in the mud and in summer it wasent cooling the motor that well so i got the 14" one ( havent tryed it yet as i only just put it on the car) i only gitched the stock fan as there for the water crossing |

if you do go a thermo, pay for a better brand and get the auto wiring kit for them. you can wire a kill switch and over ride into the kit and set when they come on. i had a 10" that flowed the same rate as a super cheap 14". mount it as high up as you can on the radiator and THEY ALL WORK BETTER PULLING AIR THROUGH THE RADIATOR THEN PUSHING IT!! so mount it behind the radiator. |

Unless you plan on doing deep water or bog holes like Glasshouse has I wouldn't bother with a thermo, I chewed up a fan and a radiator (on Logan Extreme run), mud over bonnet, at GH so fitted an AC fan off a Vitara. I run a 110 Amp EF falcon alt so may be slightly different loads to yours. Jas. |

Thermos are great for a road or a rock vehicle but if you plan to ro bog holes they have a tendancy to stuff up when you least expect it. Stick with a fixed fan or clutch fan as they are far more reliable. B4T |

I have two vehicles with 1.6s and stocker fans and 1.3 radiators, and never overheat, even the buggy ( rock vehicle ) i've never had a thermo fan but any experience i've had with them (mates) , they are just a pain in the arse ... so maybe just a show thing, or maybe just not set up correctly? |

thermos are great for mud up here as the mechanical fans munch radiators in deep water. the trick to getting a good thermo is to not buy one from stupid cheap or similar, remember OEM condenser fans are very reliable. if you buy a good radiator fan it will last as well. |

Stick with a fixed fan or clutch fan as they are far more reliable. B4T A fixed fan cost me a radiator and fan. I fitted a Vitara AC fan with a bypass switch so I can turn it off when entering water or mud. Best of both worlds.... Secret is (As Shep said) to use a GOOD QUALITY fan. |

if your destroying rads with fixed fans then you must not be blanking off the rad. or hitting the water way too fast. I look at the thermo as a reliability aspect. they have bearings and electricals that can and will be effected by mud and water. The thermo i was using was from an Alfa and it fitted the rad perfectly. it would run at 90* on a stinking hot day in peakhour and never show any signs of cooking. but out on the hwy it would start to get a bit hotter. (110*) as i said my failed in the middle of nowhere and if i didnt know a little about how they worked i would have been screwed. In a sierra its easy to drop a carpet mat down infront of the rad for water crossings. You have to get out to check the depth anyway. B4T |
