If you own a turbo diesel grand vitara with vin number JSAJTD44V00500000 and onwards you will have a dual mass flywheel. This vin number occurs late 2009 (nov dec?) and onwards According to the manufacturers and general consensus , a dual mass flywheel will stabilise torque inconsistencies and also improve gear shift "feel" in your vehicle. it also "reduces engine and driveline vibration". It will also lighten your pocket several thousand dollars when it comes to replace it. Suzuki are asking over $3000 for the flywheel and this is before you add a $700 clutch kit , rear main seal , spigot bearing and labour. Even bursons are asking almost $2900 for flywheel and clutch kit. Well today i did a dual mass flywheel (DMF) to single mass flywheel (SMF) or "solid flywheel" conversion. You will need several components fron a pre JSAJTD44V00500000. You will need the flywheel and the bolts that bolt the flywheel to the crank , the bolts on the DMF are a torx head the bolts on the SMF are 17mm. You will need the clutch kit to suit the SMF , you will also need the the 6 bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel . on the type 3 pre vin 500000 they use 6 m7 bolts which are almost unobtanium and on type 4 vin 500000 on they use 8 m6 bolts. The concentric slave cylinder is the same between both models. You will need the housing that the concentric slave bolts onto with 3 sockets head cap screws. This is the biggest secret. The difference between the height of the 2 flywheels is 13.86mm , this is made up by the difference in length of the housing that is on the type 3 and type 4. You will also need the type 3 or earlier pipe that goes from the concentric slave cylinder to the bellhousing because of the housing length difference. You will also need the bleeder nipple housing from the type 3 or earlier that clips onto the the concentric slave cylinder pipe. This took me quite a bit of time to figure out after 20 mins of trying to clip it on with frustration, i took a closer look inside comparing both and the later one had another seat preventing me from clipping it on. I did a fair bit of research (last night) before attempting the conversion comparing part numbers from type 3 to type 4 , i didnt compare the bleeder housing but i was aware of all the other changes that had to be made. The reason behind this conversion is i just had a 2010 gv diesel in for a simple timing belt and water pump replacement , coolant flush and serpentine belt.. done all that ,5km test drive ,50m from my driveway i hear this terrible clack clack sound. At first im thinking the worst , big end bearings. My heart starts to pulpate. How do you tell a customer their engine is buggered when what you have done is totally unrelated. as soon as i pull in and push the clutch in noise went away. The gears start to tick (in my head) and i figure it could only be a broken tooth in the gearbox or a DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL. There is only one other semi documented case of this conversion (on suzuki) that i could find on the interwebs and i asssume from what i read they did something dodgy , i did it with all factory parts. |

Interesting! I hope mine lasts a lot longer then! |
