Hi all I have a 99 Vitara 3 door tin top 4x4 2.0l 5 speed manual 2 in lift Vitara snorkel wench bumper 31 in Kendal m/t tires . On the trails and in the woods she's a bad a$$. Last month I broke the front pumpkin I can’t find one for replacement. So here is my Question I can buy a 99 grand Vitara 2.5 liter v6, at, 4x4, with a bad engine.($150.00) I have measured every thing and they look like every thing will bolt right up But from what I can find in the forms an the internet the ratio is different from my Vit Internet says my gear ratio is 4.30 GV ratio is 4.88 So can I change both front and back rearends to fix my Vit if I do will I have to swap the transfer case to or will mine be ok From what I can find the transfer cases will interchange with mine if I have to. I’m not sure if the gear ratio in the transfer case are the same. Or different Will the 4.88 ratio work better or worse on my Vit for on and offroad? Can anyone tell me what I need to do to make this work or will it work or any other does an don’t. What would you do? Just want to Wheel! Thanks to this forum and the people here it is awesome. The internet may be wrong on your current diff ratio. Probably 4.6 or 4.8. You will need to pull the diff out and count the teeth.
The Manual 2.5V6 GV is likely to be 4.3.
I don't think you can swap the transfers from the V6 box to the 2.0l box as the boxes vary in setup/adapter housings and such, but you shouldn't need to anyway. I think the high and low range transfer ratios are all the same.
The higher the ratio diff you use the better it is for running bigger tyres. If you are running stock(ish) sized tyres try and find and use the original diff ratio for your car.
The steel front diffs from GV's are sought after and a worthwhile upgrade with whatever ratio you put in it. Not all GV's have steel front diffs.

Tyre size seems to be 31" Kendal M/T, so lower ratio (numerically higher number) would be advantageous. Manual 2.5L GV has steel (cast iron) diff case & centre & 4.3:1 ratio - that ratio would be bad for you. Auto 2.5L GV (of that year) has alloy diff components (will bolt in, but be no stronger than the bits you just broke) but has 4.875:1 ratio. The Manual J20 = 2.0litre 5 door ran a 4.875:1 diif ratio - so if the 2.5litre wagon you are looking at is a auto, all good, swap the front diff bits over = same ratio & same (lack of) diff strength. If it is a manual, that's great for front diff component strength, but you'll need to have the ring & pinions swapped over by a diff specialist (as long as the gear set in the front diff is still serviceable - often damaged when the casting breaks).
If you can find a 2.0litre auto, or G16B 1.6litre engined car, they ran a 5.125:1 diff ratio - this would be better for your gearing, running 31" tyres, but they have alloy castings.
The transfer case won't need to be touched. Ratio in high range is 1:1 regardless. Info I have is for J20 & H25 engined 5 door wagon versions, but they share 1.816:1 low range gearing - can't see why the 3 door would be different. Rgs, Michael

Be careful with this - I suspect the original poster is in the US - and I believe the US 2.0 ran a different axle ratio to the rest of the world.
