Hi All,

Hoping you can help solve a bit of mystery, GV 1999 LE 2.5 Auto, after some heavy rain the car (mostly) refuses to turn over, acts like a dead battery, clicking sound but no g,o had battery tested and is all good, won't start off another battery or jumper kit but will start off jumper leads if the other cars engine is running. Had some checks done with multi meter, earth is fine, asked around up here and generally people say it makes no sense, could be starter motor? Started fine this morning but then for no apparent reason won't start without jumper leads off a running engine later.

When you are using jumper leads are you putting the negative connection on the engine or the battery ? I had a Magna that behaved the same the engine to engine bay earth had broken away clipped the jumper lead to th block instant start when I went the the battery similar issue.

next time it doesn't start try tapping the starter gently with a lump of wood or small hammer while someone cranks it. If it starts your starter is sticking and needs to be rebuilt/replaced/cleaned.

Starter Motor.very common in GV's had a few do it and even got one doing the same thing at moment. I usually just replace buts that's easiest for me, reckon auto electrician would be able to fix it easy as it must be a connection fault in starter itself...

Another vote for putting the black negative jumper lead directly onto a solid chunk of engine, rather than over the top of the battery terminal.
Don't know if the rain just goes along with cold weather = a bit harder to start than when warmer - still could be starter motor, but maybe pull off the battery terminals & give them a good clean & refit, nice & tightly.

It's usually the brushes - as they wear down the springs loose tension, and they don't make proper contact - you do need to get it early because they will arc and destroy the commutator surface.

Thanks for all the advice, auto electrician said it was the starter motor and has replaced with new one, claimed it was cheaper than trying to fix the old one.
