I have just been given a 1 litre gearbox with a fifth gear conversion I think from a Maruti I was wondering if it can be fitted to my lj81 ute, and how hard is this conversion also what do you guys think, is this conversion worthwhile. I have a 1 litre fitted already to it. I do some touring in it but lots of offroad.I plan to take it to the Cape in July as part of the Suzies to the cape we have 8 suzies going with us .I will post the story after the trip.

The 5 speed isn't impossible but it's not particularly easy.

Basically problem no.1 is the crossmember under the gearbox needs to be cut out and replaced with something else that doesn't kick upwards. I'd make this bolt in so you can drop the gearbox without pulling the engine out.

The shifter also comes up just on the heater box, you can make a linkage shift from supercarry bits or move the whole engine/gearbox back. You might be able to weld up a funky shaped stick, I dunno.

You do need the later (11/1984 onwards) F10a fllywheel with the spigot bearing built in because the input shaft is shorter. It's possible to mod the older style flywheel to take one. One of the sierra jackshafts would be close enough to the right length I imagine.

Obviously only you can decide if it's worth it but the 5 speed is a much stronger box. It has a slightly taller 1st gear but personally, I'd love a 5th gear/overdrive in my LJ80. 6000rpm at 110 is ridiculous and it could easily pull it. I don't want to fit 4.11 diff gears because the low range gearing is a bit marginal as it is.

Thanks for the info, the gearbox is a I litre box with the Maruti Extension housing and 5th gear married to it I think.If we decide to go ahead I will keep you posted.
