Post subject:  Drivers and PAX seats - different mounts in Sierra - why?

So took the seats out of the Drover last weekend. The mounting arrangements for the two seats are quite different. The drivers side has a cross-member that the front is attached to and the two bases for the seats are totally different arrangements. Any idea why?

I have a pair of MX5 seats to go in (my originals are stuffed, both upholstery and bases) and it would be a heck of a lot easier if I could just remove that cross bar and mount both seats the same way. Is there a good reason I shouldn't do this?

Noting that this is not going to be a road licensed vehicle and won't have seatbelts fitted nor is it designed for high speed operation.

I have no idea - but given it's a box section, i would assume it's structural.

They are different because the drivers seat doesn't tilt and slide (or cantilever like 1.0 litres). On utes both sides have the crossmember.

Don't remove it. It's illegal to do so without engineering approval.

Thanks Steve - we fabricated mounts for the MX5 seats today and should have them installed onto the existing bases soon so no need to hack into it as it turned out. Means the PAX seat won't tilt and slide but since there is no back seat...and no back it won't really matter :)
