Firstly, a big thank you to everyone for all the great info on this forum!!
My son has just become the latest owner of the sierra previously know as bogfrog, the poor little bugger needs some tlc and we aim to bring it back to its former glory. I'm an older bloke, more familiar with Nissans than Suzukis so I'm gonna need all the help I can get

Welcome mate!!!

Well done up upgrading to suzukis!!! You'll spend a lot less time pushing your zook than a Nissan :D (had to put the jab in, too good an opportunity)

Make sure you and the young bloke start a thread in "rigs of AZ" section and post pics, plans and updates.

Thanks guys, don't know about the upgrade, not a lot of room in these little things, at least when we break it, it's a lot less to push

The first job is finding a transfer for it as there isn't one in it atm, it was sitting in the back with what appears to be stuffed bearings :?

Suggest finding out what gearing is in it. Might have yourself some nice reduction gears.

If it's standard gearing then get one of someone, if the gearing is appealing then crack it open and if it's just bearings then pop some fresh ones in and away you go :)

To figure out gearing mark the input yoke against the casing and do the same for the output. See how many turns of the input equals one full revolution of the output (or vice versa? I think I've got it right but it's early and my minds not on it yet).

A standard 1.3 ltr transfer will be around 3.4 turns of the input to make one complete revolution of the output in high range. Report back

Just spotted your 'want it' post. If the case you have is 1ltr then should be around 3.8 turns to one off memory, someone can correct me if I'm wrong. If you've got a 1ltr gearing and it's just bearings I'd rebuild the case you have rather than buy another. But that's just me :)

? 1.3- 1.409 turns of the input to one turn of the output in high range.
1.0- 1.55 turns of the input to one turn of the output in high range.

2.21 and 2.55 respectively in low.

Cheers Steve!! I've got them written on the wall in my garage but I'm not there at the moment

I thought it was closer to 3.something turns as 4.16 reduction gears is 4.16 turns no?

I'm confused. All gearing is expressed as a ratio xx:1 which is directly the number of turns.

As all transfer ratios are a reduction, all ratios are the number of turns the input turns for one turn of the output.

That's my understanding.

4.16 gears would be 4.16:1 ratio
6.5 gears are 6.5:1 ratio.

I think that's high range ratio and low range is of course lower but I could be wrong on that. Your memory on the gearing is likely better than mine.

Bearindabush, report back what ratio yours is when you've had the chance to look

Ah, bit of further search and those are the low range ratios not high range. So your spot on Steve. Your 1.3 and 1ltr ratios are much closer to the mark. I shouldn't rely on my highly faulted memory eh

Thanks for the input guys! I had a play with the transfer last night only to find the shift lever wouldn't move, the input shaft bearing seems to have shit itself causing the input shaft to not mesh properly with the other gears or is trashed. Plus it was full of some really thick grey goo that wouldn't even drain when I dropped the plug :? I put half a litre of kero in there and let it sit over night, hopefully I'll be able drain whatever is in there and give it a few turns to see what gears are in there.

The shift leaver stuffing around is normally the shift bush. A very cheap fix, but if you take the shift leaver out the bush that the leaver sits in gets flogged out.

Greyish sludge is normally water in the case mixing with oil.

To select a gear and check the gearing just pop the shift lever out and pop a flat head screwdriver in and pop the selector rods forward/backward to get it to engage. Chances are the shift bush is flogged and it just gets stuck in neutral

Crack the whole case open and have a look :)

Ol mate came over with a rattle gun so we pulled the tf apart, all the gears and bearings are knackered and upon closer inspection the case looks pretty cactus too, seems there were no shims and the bearing surfaces aren't don :(
Good news is it looks like I've picked up a transfer, engine and box cheap so happy days :)
Stay tuned!!
