Hi Guys, Took the '85 Drover gun buggy out on the weekend for a good thrash on the farm. All good but I think its time to address the carby. It still runs very rich and the revs are climbing when the engine heats up. The fuel cut off solenoid is bypassed and not sure what else needs fixing. The plan is to do an overhaul on it and replace all the suction lines, gaskets, jets etc with nice clean stuff and then try to tune it properly. Old mate is a bit more skilled than me with carbys and he has tried getting it running smoothly but reckons we need to strip it down and properly clean it and service it. The whole unit is caked in gunk and hard to tell what's configured properly. So...couple of questions for the brains trust before I start ordering parts: 1) Is there any variations to carbys for an 85 I should know about or is that sufficient info to order the right parts? 2) was planning to order a rebuild kit online for it - any tips on what to buy/avoid? eBay seems to mostly have the Fuelmiser AN124NZ model. 3) Apart from a heap of spare vacuum hose, anything else we should buy/replace around the carby during this exercise? Anyone got a link to a carby service manual? All I have is the 86-88 samurai manual and I am not sure that the Carby is the same from the 85 Drover? Cheers |

Ive seen the mitsubishi galant 4g33 carb used with great success on a few cars recently, you can get them for under $150 new on ebay and are simple to fit. The early corolla carbs are also a good swap but take a bit more effort to get right. Both are much better than sierra carbs on angles offroad Id say only 1 in 5 sierra carbs are able to be rebuilt due to worn linkages/shafts ect... its expensive and more involved than just putting a kit through normally. |

OK - before we look at that upgrade option might just be worth a full clean and reset of the existing carby back to spec to see if works as-is. Anyone know an online source for a carby manual? Can I just use the one from the later model Samurai book I have? |

Further to this - the '86-'88 Samurai manual I have describes the carburetor as: 2-barrel downdraft type carburetor with... The primary system has; (1) a mixture control solenoid valve which is operated by the electrical signals from the Electronic Control Module (ECM) so as to maintain the optimum air fuel ratio of the primary slow and the primary main systems at all times, (2) a fuel cut solenoid valve which is for the fuel cut under deceleration and prevention of the dieseling, and (3) an acceleration pump system. I am 99.9% sure that my '85 doesn't have an ECM! Does this mean the carby I have is totally different from the one in the Samurai manual? A quick look suggests that they are physically very, very similar so I was hoping I could use most of what the manual says as a guide to tuning it. |

Aussie Sierras have different carbies to the samurais. I fitted a 4K corolla carby to a friends sierra, they're $120ish? on ebay brand new. It bolts right on, couldn't be easier. It's basically the same as the sierra carby but with slightly larger throats and a manual choke. The car started straight up, idled and ran perfectly! |

Yep. Note the ebay ones don't have the fuel inlet barb. Corollas used a hard line. I can't remember but I *think* we used the throttle cable bracket from an actual 4K corolla, you'd have to fabricate something. For the hat I used the bolt thingo out of the top of the Sierra carb upside down and made a new gasket. You need short bolts for the 4K carb instead of the long ones the G13 carb has.
