Have a 94 Vitara, and the hazard lights are giving me some grief. They come on randomly, and usually can be shut off by turning off the ignition and then re-starting.

Removed the fuse and still goes right on.

Will go for a week with no issues, then a couple times in one day.

SWMBO has just called and informed me rather curtly that they are now going, have been for 20 minutes, and all tricks no worky.

Naturally 'tis my fault so if any-one can ... please save my marriage ...

As strange as this may sound - the hazard light switch is the only thing that can cause the hazard lights to come on - until that switch is depressed, they are turn signals, not hazard lights, the left & right sides are completely separate circuits until the switch is depressed.

Next - if anything still works with the fuse removed, you've removed the wrong fuse - the fuse supplies power, without power, there is no way it's going to work - so - which fuse did you remove?

... in which case I guess both turn indicators are randomly coming on simultaneously ...

Pretty sure it's the hazard fuse that's been removed. Switch will not turn on hazard lights until fuse is re-fitted. Pull fuse and they stop ... unless they are into one of their random events.

As you probably recognize, the turn signal lamps and wiring are used by the hazard light circuit so the majority of the wiring is common to both - the two circuits come together at the hazard light switch. The turn signals are fed by an ignition switch supplied fuse (they go off when the ignition is switched off), the hazard lights are required to work with the ignition off, so they are fed from a constant source fuse.

For the symptoms you describe to be possible, the power source has to be the turn signal fuse (it continues with the hazard fuse removed and stops when the ignition is switched off) but for both left & right indicators to flash simultaneously there will have to be a short circuit, either in the wiring related to the turn signal switch or the hazard light switch.

I can't simplify it more than that.

problem solvered ... thanks anyway.

Seems that at sometime in the past there'd been an alarm system fitted, then only partially removed.
