Post subject:  h20a 96 Vitara gearbox alternatives

Hi my gearbox has noisy 1,2,3&5 gears which I've read is a semi common problem and I'm having trouble finding a replacement (maybe just looking in the wrong places) so I was wondering if there are any manual boxes that can be used as a replacement? I found a 5speed from an 01 Vitara h25a cheap and was wondering will it fit and with what mods and is it a stronger gearbox.
Alternatively can anyone tell me an approximate price to get a reconditioned box and what are the chances of the same problems reoccurring.
Thanks

Mine did that, was input or output shaft bearing, can't remember which. I had the bearings replaced by a gearbox specialist rather than replacing the box.

How much did you pay just so I can get an idea of what it'll cost

I'm not 100% sure because it was about 10 years ago. but I think about $1100-1200, but that included removal and re-installation of the box and a new clutch.

How did you go with your gearbox dilemma.

Can I pick your brain.

I’ve got. 95 vitara lwb sv620 with the 2.0 v6 bottom end converted to 2.5 heads . 5 Spd.

Firstly what gearbox do the h20a come with. As I’ve got a shagged input drive. But I can’t find a box or input shaft for it.

Input shaft is running 20 teeth and gear end is 23 teeth.

Dimension input shaft:

Length 230mm (9.055 inches)

Length from spigot end to gear 190mm (7.48 inches)

Spigot end diameter 15mm (0.591 inch)

What gearbox did you go as I’m sure the H25a has a larger clutch aswell as being a bigger gearbox. The housing pushes the box back 2” which means you need 2” short drive shafts to the rear, the front drive shaft needs to then be 2” longer.

I’m to Believe you have to cut out where shifters go as as they’ll be further back.

I’m curious to which avenue you took.
