Was changing the wheel bearings on my rear axle shafts today and noticed something on one of them 
I think what's happened is that some water has got in under the retaining ring and it's corroded the metal away. Unless it's a defect from the factory that's the only explanation I can come up with. |

It could have been that someone welded the retaining ring to try and get it off and got a bit excited when they did it, maybe by about 100 amps too much OR they used a grinder and cut the retaining ring too far and then welded it back up OR some rock ape with a 12 pound hammer and a 1 inch cold chisel try knocking the ring off ( would have to be a pretty strong cold chisel. Either way I would say that axle is shepped...... |

damo thats no probs mate....I had to go to an engineer to get my old retaining rings off a few years back and the stoopid idiot got stuck into the retaining rings with a 9 inch grinder and proceeded to cut a nice groove into my axle shaft...a lot worse than what yours is. We just put the new bearing and retaining ring on and I've driven it for 3 years afterwards and it has been no issue. 
Running 34s and no breakage...in the time that it was runnign before my engine swap... |

Running 34s and no breakage...in the time that it was runnign before my engine swap... It is a pretty chunky part of the shaft. It could cause a problem if it's made a stress point. Cool that yours survived for so long after being butchered!!
