Hey all

Im just about to replace a gearbox on my 89 Sierra. Was thinking that while its out, I might as well do the clutch while Im at it.

Ive got a generous mechanic friend whos helping as im a bit of a mechanical dunce.

Shes got a Vitara G16 1.6 litre in her, and I was just wondering if anyone knew if that means I need to buy Vitara clutch kit or will it be a Sierra one?

Cheers in advance for any help, apologies if its an obvious/ stupid question!

D

Pretty sure it’s still a Sierra clutch to suit the Sierra gearbox.. Are the Vit gearbox input shafts the same spline count?

You use a sierra clutch. When you put the 1.6 in you use the sierra flywheel because the vitara one is larger diameter and has different clutch to suit to the different flywheel.

There are 2 different gearbox input shafts in 1.3l sierra gearboxes, count the number of splines before ordering a clutch.

I've used clutches from wrecked jimnys in mine twice now... current clutch is over 5 years old, maybe close to 7, and had 30,000km on it when it was fitted. The pedal feel is great and they're about the same pressure as an exedy HD clutch. I was just fortunate that suzistore had some low km mooshed jimny's to flog the parts off when my clutch was gone...

Food for thought if you're on a budget.

Ive heard this but there is no difference in part numbers at alot of shops. Same as using a generic stock sierra clutch it would seem only difference being that the thrust bearing doesnt fit if you buy it in kit form

You will need machining, and the bearings anyway. Take the old one in.

bye

Brian reckons that Exedy etc just kept making the sierra standard and HD units for the Jimny, even though when you take a wrecked jimny clutch out the fingers feel as firm as a sierra HD clutch. This means that those replacing their jimny clutch with a "standard" aftermarket one are likely getting less pressure than factory, and those fitting a HD clutch to a jimny are really just getting close to factory pressure.
