So 92 leafy has a SBox with adjuster on the removeable lid and the breather on the body of the Sbox... I have a reconditioned one that has the adjuster AND the breather on the lid.. They look the same apart from that... Are they interchangeable.. eg.. steering shaft and steering rack the same size ????

Yes, they are interchangeable.

However, I have no idea how a steering box can be reconditioned. None of the wear parts are available separately, so any “reconditioning” would consist of seal replacement and a coat of black paint. (Or just the latter)

I’d be checking it meets starting torque specs at straight ahead without going tight once lock is applied. They ALL wear around the straight ahead position and this makes them impossible to adjust properly. I’d do this before you put it in the car.

Like everything on a Sierra, there is a spec for starting torque and it’s tighter than you’d anticipate or achieve by hand or “feel”

Thanks for that.. Yes it has been cleaned out, seals are good and it has had new lubricant put in. It is tight at the center and anything will be an improvement on the one that is in it at the moment. They cop a hiding being driven around on our property. My sons enjoy doing things without engaging the front hubs to see where they can go in 2wd which is hard on the SB because it is getting pushed through places like down into the dry creek bed and up and out the other side when it should be getting pulled by the front wheels as well. The boys have both had their Sierras ages before they were old enough to get licenses and dirt bikes since they were 5-6 so driving around in the creek etc has always been a thing for them and it's still fun and done often. I just wish they would use 4wd and be a bit kinder to their cars.
