Hi All,

I have a 96 Vitara with a G16B and the bottom end is stuffed. So I was wondering if anyone has converted there's to a M16A series engine and if so what issues were encountered on the way.

Cheers Jace

Haven't done it myself, and don't know anyone who has, but, my guess is it's going to be more work that you want to get into - let's assume, to simplify the discussion that it the M16 will bolt up to the transmission (which I doubt it will) so the fabwork is limited to engine mounts, and plumbing - the challenge is going to be in the electronics - you're going to need the ECU, the entire wiring harness from the vehicle the M16 came out of, along with whatever other computers the vehicle had.

For example, if the M16 is coming from an NGV with the four mode 4WD, the ECU is going to be looking for inputs from the transmission/transfer case controller (or the transmission/transfer case itself if the controller is integrated into the ECU.

Easy way out will be to get another G16 from a Baleno or similar - or - maybe rebuild the one you have now 8O

This would be an epic job.

Best starting point would be the (very rare) m16 from an AWD SWB NGV, as this is the only north/south application for the engine. This would avoid you having to buy a heap of m13 Jimny stuff to convert the m16 to north/south.

Gearbox will be difficult but not impossible.

As Fordem points out, the wiring will drive you insane. I suspect you’d need everything from a NGV with the M16- possibly even instruments, ignition barrel etc to make the ECU believe it’s still in an NGV.

Much cheaper to buy a sv420 or sv620 vitara or GV that already has a better motor fitted than an M16, or just swap inna fresher G16b bottom end.
