I am fitting a motor out of another vehicle to my lj50, the replacement has no oil pipes to the pistons only to the lower part of the engine ,it has 8 reed valves instead of 6 and a different head, the distributor has no automatic advance and was fitted that way when made, I am wondering what the reason for this was and whether I would be better to fit the dizzy out of the origional motor I was also wondering if the jetting in the carby is the same, I am told that this motor has higher peformance than the origional. I also am wondering what it came out of, it is still stamped lj50. Looking foward to your replies. David Raeburn. |

I believe that would be the 78 onward motor fitted to lJs in japan. Basically went into a lJ80 body until almost mid 80s. They used full synthetic oil, so the oil bypass from the bottom end was seen as sufficient to get to the piston rings. I personally would run a light premix fuel ... say 200 : 1 synthetic, or 50 : 1 mineral. I only ever used AMSOIL synthetics in my LJs, ( and all my 2 stroke engines) although there are now many manufacturers following AMSOIL's lead, so worth looking around. |

I wouldn't bother with running any premix, as there is an oil line that connects just under the carb, to supply the rings with oil I've run one of these engines for over six years with no issues I believe they were actually out of the carry vans as well, these engines are supposed to be a "low pollution" version. |

I still wonder if the motor can operate efficiently with no automatic advance as it came from the factory also is the jetting in the carby the same as the standard motor. David |

this is why spark plug choice is so vital |

factory recommended ONLY, last thing you want to do is burn a hole in a piston |

those engines came in the sj30 in japan. They we not better performance wise, the lack of oil gallerys was due to early attempts at emissions control. less smoke. the carby is exactly the same. if you run any hotter plugs you WILL burn a hole in the piston. honestly the mechanical advance on the lj 50s was so inefficient and such a small amount of advance its next to useless any way. |
