Hi all,

Greetings from Crete, Greece.

Registered here seeking some advice.
Looking to buy an '84 410 plastic hardtop after being house bound 6-weeks, with all the rain we've had this winter washing out the dirtroads where I live.
Only my old Panda 4x4 and my friends 86 410 were able to somehow circulate in the mud, and as such I'm needing another 4x4 for such conditions.

Have found said vehicle, and while the F10a engine runs like a top, minimal rust, seems every other rotating part is loud/shot/needs greasing or needs replacing. Front wheel bearings are a bit loose.
I'd like to think that u-joints and bearings are available (but read somewhere that the stub axle u-joint is not replaceable- I'll have to see.)
The rear u-joint seemed ready to explode. Don't know about pinion play.
Also read here that these early 410 don't share parts with anything newer.

The tc seems fine and it goes high, low neutral.

Main sticky point is the the tranny jumps out of second (only), the other gears engage and stay put. Are the detents accessible from the top?
The shifter is sloppy but I've read that there some plastic "sheet" that might help.

Any clues as what I might check or is it gearbox rebuild time? Owner said tranny has been changed once already.
Anything else I should be aware of and check. AFAIK, car was one owner, but seems service was minimal on it

Would appreciate any advice,

regards,
Nick

All the consumable mechanical parts are still readily available for the early 1ls. You can buy virtually anything both genuine Suzuki and aftermarket.

Mine jumped out of second under deacceleration because the circlip on the end of the mainshaft was mushroomed out and letting all the gears float down the shaft and pull it out of gear.

Unless it's something like the gearstick boot causing it then the gearbox will have to come out. Luckily, it's almost surely the easiest 4wd gearbox to remove and rebuild.

Yasou, Nick.

An '84 is actually not an "early" SJ410, they stared in '81 so '84 is mid to late production.

Depending on the actual "type" (ie mark or model), then things are either able to be converted from later models or exactly the same parts. An '84 will either have a metal dash panel with a 4wd light near the ignition key (Type 2), or have a plastic dash with the 4wd light within the instrument cluster (Type 3).

Type 2 shares uni joints and gearbox features with the earlier LJ80-2. Type 3 is almost identical to the narrow SJ413. Most parts are available for both, but you must know which type you have.

"Stub axle U-Joint", what is that? Do you mean the part that is like a Constant Velocity Joint in the front steering hubs? That is called a Birfield Joint. These days it might be harder and harder to find a new or good second hand one of these for a 410. Good news is that the Narrow SJ413 Birfield AND INNER AXLE SHAFT is a direct fit replacement for either Type 2 or 3 and strength upgrade.

Have a look at the parts catalogs on the SSG site. You will need to look at the SJ410-2 or SJ410-3 pages, but compare with the SJ413 to see what is the same.

Thanx for the replies everyone.
The vehicle is a Type2 with the metal dash.
I was surprised that the driveshafts were much smaller in diameter than my friends SJ shafts.

The stub axle I was referring to are the slip yokes or joints. My concern is that these didnt have boots on them and whether the slamming from the bad ujoints wear the splines on these. Are they a wear item?

The birfs in the front looked ok and they had the scrapers in tact.

SSG site????

Nick

In my post, the words "SSG Site" are a hyperlink. Click on it to go to their site.

The splines in Slip joints will eventually wear, but having boots on and regularly greasing should give a very long life.
