| Post subject: | Hard to select first gear |
I have recently just had me gearbox fully rebuilt and a new clutch fitted in my 06 jimny manual The issue im having is selecting 1st gear i had issues shifting to first time before the rebuild and the clutch. and after the rebuild and new clutch in im still having issues.it sometimes shifts ok but other times it just wont go into first and need either abit of force of i have to put it into neutral and then shift to first Just woundering is it something i just have to give it abit of time for all the new parts to wear in?? Or is it just a common jimny thing? |

Not sure if the clutch may just need adjusting as everything is brand new |

So it only wants to go into first if im at a complete stop which can be very annoying when just rolling at walking pace or slowing right down to traffic lights i just gave to stay in second unless i completly stop the car is this just normal for a jimny? |

Not normal. Clutch isn’t fully disengaging. |

When that happened to me the clutch cable was on its way out and snapped mid-gear change down to first. Drove it home clutchless (rev matching, stalling at lights) and replaced the cable that day.. all good again since. Mine broke at the bearing that goes onto the clutch pedal, so that joint was flexing, but working even though it was broken until it fully let go. |

Wouldn’t a 2006 Jimny have a hydraulic clutch? Sorry, bit ignorant about M drivelines. |

Fair call. Misadjusted or stretched cable then for my money. |

I thought it could of been the clutch, when my mechanic done the rebuild of the gearbox and installed the new clutch he did mention that he may have to adjust the clutch pedal later down the track, he said that he couldn't adjust it to much at the time when he installed the new clutch as the clutch plate is alot thicker than my old one (as my old one was very warn down), could that be the reason?? Once he adjusts it abit it should be better?? It was always a pain to get into first before the rebuild but i never had to come to a complete stop to put it into 1st. |

You can adjust it yourself... FSM says something like 1" of pedal free travel and job done, but if you have that then maybe the cable has a kink or like I said before is on it's way out. Cables are about $50 genuine, and take about 15-20mins to fit and adjust if that's the cause. |

Yep. Pedal free play is the only variable. |
