Hi Guys Just wondering if anyone has attempted and or succeeded in pairing a TS Astra electric power steering pump to a Vitara or Jimny power steering box. Thanks Tim |

Yes, someone has done it. I wouldn’t bother. The point of electrohydraulic steering pumps is to rescue emissions. Run a conventional hydraulic pump. |

Thanks for your reply Gwagensteve. I thought that running a conventional pump there would be some sort of power loss or is it so minute that its not really noticed? I have a Gti motor in my sierra and the benT kit still needs to be modded to suit, so this is why I thought I would look into running an Astra pump matched to a jimny box. I had future plans to run a supercharger in where the p/s pump would usually sit so this is why I was looking into this other setup. Do you know of who did it and if it worked well? Thanks |

The power loss is undetectable unless you’re working the steering hard at low engine speed. Nothing is for nothing- electrohydraulic systems consume very high current which applies engine load through the alternator when in use, so there’s still power consumption. For manufacturers chasing g/km co2 on the Euro emissions test, it makes a difference that the electric motor isn’t adding any parasitic drag when the car isn’t being steered. Mounting a PS pump will be easier than getting the astra system to work. |

I had success running a TS powersteer pump. But I must agree with steve, the cost of fittings and lines coupled with the fiddly ways of getting it all to work together, you would be much better off getting a standard setup. The only advantage I found was being able to still have P/S when the car had stalled, but never have I needed it. |

Also the current draw is huge. It is fused at 80a! A standard alternator will just not cut it. And if night driving at low speed with lighting and other load, expect the alternator to be working at max load alot of the time. The current is progressive with the steering input, but you do notice the lights dim while steering. |

Thanks for the reply KeVl@r I test fitted the vitara pump and it had stuff all room where I had it mounted on the block.When adjusted it rested on the chassis rail and when I sat the pulley on the shaft it was hard up on the passenger rad mount. I pulled it all off and sat the astra pump where I thought it would fit nicely, next minute I had three brackets bent up and bolted in and the astra pump sitting proudly in place and hey the standard vitara p/s line screws perfectly into the astra pump so no fittings needed. I had some wiring the same gauge as the pump lying around and an unused 60amp stereo fuse too which I will use. First test I fired up the pump to bleed the lines and fluid was pissing out the banjo bolt on the jimny box because the copper washer wasn't sitting flush on the box. After sorting that out the second attempt went smoothly and works really well. Im looking forward to road testing it this afternoon. It actually ended up being a pretty easy install and in my eyes easier than making a mount from scratch for the vitara pump, lining up the belt and relocating the rad support. I will let you know after a few drives if I hate it or not and have started making a mount for the vitara pump. ha ha |

Just a little update, I drove the Zook around for a few hours over the weekend, I am really happy with the setup and now it is a pleasure to drive. The only time I notice the pump working is when it is on full lock otherwise it is very quiet. |
