Hi.
SJ410 is now fully stripped down.
It has 78,000 kms on it.
Several questions.
What refurb could be needed on the diffs? The front tail shaft was removed at xxxx kms by previous owner so front diff has done little work. Rear diff has about 8mm rotational slack if that makes sense.
Is it worthwhile splitting the transfer case and gear box to inspect bearings.
At 78k kms while the engine is out is it worthwhile pulling the head off to inspect the bores and valves?
Any thing else I should look for while it is dismantled?

Personally, I'd avoid stripping things down that don't actually need fixing. If the oils look good then you're probably alright, if there's water, rust or a lot of metal in the oil then it's probably worth stripping down. Given the age of the vehicle I'd say most of the oil seals would need replacing.

As for the slack in the rear diff, that's pretty normal. As long as there's no up/down play at the pinion flange then there's probably not to much to worry about there.

I’m with Sideways on this, especially for the diffs, leave them alone as much as possible.

Also if you find heaps of swarf, water or crap in the diffs I’d just change the oil then run the diffs for a short while and change the oil again. Personally I wouldn’t strip them down unless it was absolutely necessary.

I 3rd the above. Wait until you have a need for transfer gears and diff lockers and then pull your stuff apart to inspect. Pulling apart diffs and not fitting lockers makes no sense to me

Hi.
The Sierra is in a thousand pieces and is nearly ready to go back together. Both axle are on stands while I refurbish the brakes and pretty up the metalwork (rustproof and paint).
When I have all the brake components removed can I pull the axle shafts out without upsetting the diff allignment/setup?

Further to the above i just watched a youtube where the diff centre was removed as 1 peice. I assume that doing this and then replacing it will not affect any adjustments. Regards Alan
