Hi. Does any one know the purpose of the steel plate bolted inside the rocker cover of a 1981 1.0 litre engine. Also what is the gasket between that plate and the rocker cover called and where can the gasket be purchased from? Regards Alan
It's to create an oilsplash-free chamber to draw crankcase vapours out to the aircleaner. Without it, you'd be getting wet oil down the vent tube and into the aircleaner.
It's also serves a secondary purpose of damping resonance vibrations i the alloy cover, reducing noise and preventing fatigue fractures of the cast alloy.
The gasket is part number 11173-73000 and is still available through sources like Megazip, etc, but i'm sure that a dab of silicon sealant would work just as well.
