Anybody done a G16 rebuild lately?
How much ?

Ye ol' Vit getting on a bit and starting to think about doing the motor rather than selling and then having to find something to replace it with.

Hi Eddy,

You are likely to get replies like 'don't bother with a rebuild - they don't seem to last too long after being opened up'
The only problem with this, is finding a decent s/hand G16B is getting harder.
If your engine doesn't have a cracked block or head, then it's a better start than buying an unknown quantity.
As well, you'll need to notify the rego authorities & insurance about the engine no. change if you go that route - not a biggie though.

To your original question though, A 'proper' full rebuild (boring, new pistons, ring, bearings, crank grind or linish, gasket set, strip & assembly labour) is likely to be in the region of $4-$5k - more than the car is likely worth, which is where the 'find a s/hand motor' comes in, as that should be in the $500 - $1500 range.
A 'freshen up' (quick hone, new rings, bearing shells, gasket set & labour) will be about 1/2 the cost of a full rebuild, but that's where the thoughts of 'they don't last very long once opened up' come in. As an open deck block, they are trickier to work with than a more common block, with casting material supporting the top of the cylinders.
You would also be up for the cost of pulling out & installing the motor back in the car, if you don't do it your self. This will add about another $1,000, including consumables & fluids.

When my G16 gives out I'll be looking towards an M-series engine, probably m15. Gearbox swap is the only thing that concerns me, but Jimny manual boxes appear to be holding up OK, and of course are newer than my original '92 sierra box.

Not sure how simple the swap is in a Vit though?

I've rebuilt plenty of assorted engines, was my job (40 years ago) and mostly they seemed to last, whether full build or just rings'n'bearings refresh.
Still got most of my gear, and pretty sure I can still handle it, even on one leg
Car is prolly worth about 2 grand, so 2 grand on the motor is not really gunna be overcapitalizing as it's basically a good solid, straight car.

M series thing sounds interesting, might need to google that a bit.

... ... but .... then there's the transmission to think about
... and the steering box is weeping a bit
.... upholstery on the seats could use a few stitches

This is the big question!! Answer is how far do you want to go?

Steering box is weeping a little, personally I wouldn’t worry about that until the steering becomes loose enough to be a problem and can’t be tightened anymore.

Gearbox is old, use it until it breaks.

Can rebuild the motor yourself, go for it!! It works or it doesn’t but if it doesn’t you’ve lost a little money and a fair bit of time, no big deal.
