Hi, I have recently bought a 1989 Sierra 4x4, the engine is a bit tired and underpowered for the Broome beaches, is it possible to fit a Toyota Corolla engine or similar into the vehicle? being in NW of WA my choices are limited. Tia.

It would be very difficult to fit a whole Corolla into the sierra, though you could fit the engine! :D

People have fitted various Corolla engines to Sierras in the past but it's a fairly complex conversion and you need the RWD gearbox to match which are very expensive and hard to get these days, especially in Broome I'd imagine.

I'd look for a 1.6L Vitara or Baleno engine, they're a straightforward conversion. They bolt it with a cheap adapter plate. There used to be shitloads of Vitaras in Broome, there's got to be some sitting around somewhere.

You could also look for a donor G13bb Jimny or a GTi swift but I imagine both those cars are pretty darn hard to get where you are. I did see a Jimny in the wreckers there a couple of months back but I think that was a VVT M13 model. It's possible to convert to the M13 but it's a lot more work.

Aside from the above, there's no easy/straightforward engine conversion for Sierras.

Thanks for that, think I’ll look for a G16a motor, seems a lot less work.

Before you go down the engine path - What size tyre are you running? If bigger than stock, have you addressed the gearing?
