Hi. I have to replace the oil seal on the front diff of an 81 1.0 litre sierra. Apparently this model does not have a crush tube for bearing preload like thd 1.3 litre models do but uses shims for the preload. Does anyone have the procedure for setting the preload of this model. I do have a 1.5 to 10nM digital display torque wrench to check the turning resistance. Regards Alan |

Buzz it off and buzz it back on tight. The shims set the preload so no need to be that specific about torquing the nut to a certain tension. |

Correct. Shims make it a straight forward flange on and off procedure if you are only going to replace the seal. However, if you replace either of the Pinion Bearings, then new shims will be required and you will need to set up the pinion depth with shims (in 2 locations) using a dial gauge. In that case, using a new crush tube as fitted to Type 3/4/5 SJ40 might be simpler. |

Hi. All back together nearly. Just need to torque the pinion nut. Does anyone know the torque setting for this nut. 81 model Sierra without a crush tube. I have only been able to get a manual for the later model Sierras which have a crush tube therefore a different setting. Any idea where an 81 manual can be found. Thanks in advance. Alan |

May have found the torque. In a prevoius post it was mentioned to use the LJ80 settings. 200 nm is about midrange of the required torque. Regards Alan |

The torque is not critical. Manual says: "1,700-2,300Kg.Cm (65-108ft.lb)" Just tighten the nut until the castellated nut aligns with a split pin hole on the pinion. I don't which manual you are looking at? Haynes or some cr**? All Suzuki SJ40 manuals start with Type 1/2 and add supplements in the back for later models. |

OK. I stuffed up. Where the oilseal fits was rusted for the first 8mm approx then the diff case was shiny smooth. I assumed the seal fitted in where the shiny metal was. This put the seal against the bearing. ( i did clean up all the corroded metal) Also on the flange that fits into this seal the shiny surface is only 8mm long. When i filled the diff with oil it poured out the back under the seal. The oil gallery at the bottom of the diff is exposed by about 1mm which allows the oil to flow under the seal. I watched a youtube where the seal was installed flush with the end of the diff. If i did that i am sure the rougher metal of the flange would chew it out in no time at all. I do not have much faith in the video as he torqued the pinion nut up with a rattle gun. My options are a new seal seated 2 mm shallower ???? Regards Alan |

After more research there is a difference between an 81 and an 84+ oil seal. Cant figure out what yet. Megazip lists the replacement as 14.8mm wide and says 2 are needed? 14.8mm might be the overall width with the external lip. |

Some versions of these diffs have plastic-filled locknuts that don't use a split pin. Same method, just spin them up till they're tight. The torque is not critical. |
