New to Auszookers.
I have a SV420 softtop with a 5 speed manual gearbox and a J20A engine.
The gearbox is noisy and needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
Question is does a 5 speed manual from a SE416 or an SQ Grand Vitara fit.
Thanks

Hi there & welcome to AusZookers!.
Unfortunately for you, you have a reasonably rare combination.
The SV series was only made 1996-1998 & the J20 was only in some of the SWB cars in that era.
The earlier SE416 used the G16B engine, so the belhousing at least will be different from your J20.
The transfer case is the same though.
If you find a SQ420 (majority of SWB, but minority of LWB Grand Vitaras) there is a good chance it will be all good & interchangable.
Suzuki did some strange detail changes from time to time, but someone else might have done this swap to advise if it is directly the same.
Good luck with your search.

I've looked at them several times, and If I had needed to swap a J20 gearbox I would have done it but havn't needed to at this stage. But I'm fairly sure if you remove bellhousing, clutch setup section so forth and put onto the 1.6L gearbox it will work, but no one that I know or have heard of has done it which makes me question why.., so no guarantees from me. If you send me a text(0437097475) I'll try send you some pic of both bellhousing insides.

Hi there,

The SQ Grand Vitara gear box is completly different to the SE or SV Gearboxes.

The SE416 G16B gearbox and SV gearboxes are very similar but not a direct swap.

The Main difference is the input shafts. (thats the only thing that stops it from being a direct swap.)
The bell housing and gear ratios are also slightly different. ( mainly 5th gear in the SV box is taller geared)

You are better off to get it rebuilt, my SV420 had noises and vibration at 320k replaced it wit one from wreckers with 85k on it. have put another 90k on this one and same noise developing. its the shaft bearing at rear of box (we pulled it apart). 1.6 boxes definitely don't fit totally different, i have one on my floor next to the old j20A box
cheers bob
good luck on your search
