hi I'm new to 4wding and i just recently brought a 1994 Suzuki sierra sj70 and it has a lot of rust hence the username rust bucket anyways i just have a few questions
1. how many K's can you get on a full tank i live in QLD BTW
2. how big is the tank e.g 20L
3. the car is going to be my daily driver well more like the only car i drive so what mods would you guys recommend that may increase the on and off road ability
4. whats a cheap way to repaint it with a similar color or any color
5. my grandpa is a big lad I'm thinking 95kg or more he holidays on bribie island a lot and would really like to go see the forts/bunkers i told him i would take him when my car is roadworthy/registered but now I'm worried that he might be too heavy if u include the weight of me 55kg my grandpa 95kg my girlfriend weight unknown a 4th person or fridge 4 fishing rods 2x20L Jerry cans on the roof a shovel the bull bar and other basic gear i might need I'm thinking the chances of getting stuck are higher

sorry for all the questions my zook won't be registered until next year I'm just planning a trip for when it is registered (sorry for the bad photo) p.s. definitely want a long range tank to go over too Fraser

Driven sensibly, around 400km to a tank.

40 Litres

They're sort of two conflicting things. Increasing on road ability generally reduces off road ability. I'd consider an Old Man Emu suspension kit which will improve handing and ride, and slightly improve of road ability. I would definitely fit a compressor - the biggest thing you can do to improve a sierras off road capability is let the tyres down, so being able to pump them back up or reseat a tyre on thread if you get carried away and deflate the tyres too much is a good idea. Other than that, extended diff breathers, ensure the charging system is in good condition - thats the basic stuff that won't compromise the car on road.

Do you have access to spray equipment/a booth? if not, a respray is going to be very expensive. You can slap any paint on it you like, but a poor paint job generally looks worse than bad factory paint.

Sure, more weight means more change of getting stuck. Best thing about passengers is they can get out which foxes the problem if there's a particular stretch of sand or obstacle that's a problem. A sierra, even fully loaded, is superior in sand than pretty much any other vehicle so don't worry too much about it. Let the tyres down (try something like 12 PSI initially) and you'll pretty much get where anyone else can. Don't put jerry cans on the roof. I'm not from Queensland, but from what I can see, there's at least one servo on Bribie. I don't know why you'd need 80L of fuel to drive around an Island that's not very big.

I can't comment on fuel requirements on Fraser island, but long range tanks are pretty expensive and heavy. maybe take your jerry cans and leave them at camp and enjoy a lighter car with better ground clearance.

question 1: ok cool thanks.

question 2: smaller then i thought but still a good size.

question 3: I'm going to make some extended shackles and get some cheap 2 inch shocks so i can lift the car 2 inches i'm short on money so i can't get new leafs but i am definitely thinking of getting a compressor (which would you recommend) and i will extend the diff breathers into the cab and when you say charging system if you mean alternator then yes it works but i'm not sure if it fully charges the battery, it was new 4 months ago it's a small battery and has never been charged and remains in the car with the car being started once or twice every couple of weeks, it still has enough power to start the car.

question 4: i have a spray gun i was thinking for just covering the parts i don't want painted as best i can and then getting some cheap paint in the color i like, painting the car then going over it with some clear paint to sorta protect the car a bit.

OK so question 5: i was thinking of 2 jerrys just to be safe but now I'm thinking only 20L will be enough i want to take a jerry just to be on the safe side in case i decide to go to lighthouse reach or somewhere else i just want to be on the safe side.

first proper trip will be bribie so fraser is going to have to wait.
