Hello newbie here ,bear with me , I own a Suzuki grand Vitara 2.5 v6 1999 steel housing in front i have just put a 208 ARB locker in the front and a 209 ARB locker in the back, both are limited slip diffs air lockers :used the ARB compressor also. my problem is i am getting a grinding noise from the front left axle when i accelerate or under load this noise comes in, could it be a cv joint . i have tried on a track to isolate with hubs out free wheeling in 4 wheel drive 1 st low no noise. i then locked hubs in used 4 wheel drive low 1 st gear noise happened i tried taken 4 wheel drive, |

From memory that's a rear sierra locker. You may find there are 2 issues. Drivers side CV shaft is too large in diameter to fit into the side plate of the airlocker, and the CV shaft has a circlip which there is no groove for it to locate into on the side gear. Ask me how I know this... This is what stops the cv shaft from engaging the splines... too small of a hole.

Here is a pic of the stub shaft, which i had machined down to fit into the rd208 airlocker.

I have not yet had the rd208 side gear modified to accept the circlip Which has allowed the shaft to "fall out" whilst driving in 4wd, causing all the diff oil to vacate the housing.

hay thanks for comments i am going to have a look at this . At present i have the transfer case out and inspecting the chain ,gears,bearings all looks good i started this , because was advised chain may be slipping on gears . |

No. I just purchased a genuine Airlocker. I can assure you (and the OP) they’re not an LSD when unlocked. |

Just a question, will all the Vitara Cv's need to machined down to fit and if so how much by? Is that part of the shaft meant just clearance or should it offer some support to the spines ? Ive heard that being the same locker used in a Sierra , it possible that the locker at this point is machine to suit the Sierra tapered axles - Can anyone clarify this . Also Peter you mentioned the circlip . Where you using a CV from GV ( 95mm long ) as opposed to a Vitara CV ( 104mm Long ) . Or did you still have the issue using a Vitara CV ? |

Assuming you are not mixing & matching stuff, so a Vitara locker in a Vitara differential, the Vitara CVs should not need to be machined, as the air lockers are designed for use in the Vitaras - the Grand Vitara CV needs to be machined because you're fitting a locker designed for a different vehicle, ARB does not make an air locker for the GV, so the norm is to use a Vitara locker in the Grand Vitara differential. The Grand Vitara differential incorporates a pneumatic freewheel clutch that the Vitara differential does not have, this causes the Grand Vitara differential to be offset to one side, which is why the machining is necessary. |
