Post subject:  NOB Question.. Spraying rims with tyre attached

I know this reaks of Facepalm. but any suggestions on what I can use to cover the tyre when im spraying off my rims..

Ive tried tape and newspaper but the tape just wont stick to the tyre..

Thought about coating the tyre in something slick of oily so that the off-spray wont soak in?

Any suggestions?

hah

Cheers

Just checked again, I suppose I could leave the last part of the rim taped off, where they weight the rim..
But going from white to black might look shite..

Going to hunt through the house for some suitable gunk now

are you just using spray cans? I don't worry about covering the tyre. You can get close to the edge without spraying the tyre. Jack the wheel off the ground and you can turn it and spray. or take the wheel off then you can avoid the hubs

Yeh steve, Using cans, Have taken the tyre off but started priming and tagged the black straight away with the wind..
I dont 'really' care if the tyre cops a bit but yeh..

Pain in the arse.. Even tried some gaffa and she wont stick down..

Cut out a piece of cardboard with a semi circle the size of your rim and use it as a cover to stop the overspray getting on the tyre

on a set of rim's I painted with tyres on I made up a flat "do~nut" of gaffer tape that pushed over the lip of the rim.

keep building it up so you end up "masking" about 1/2 the tyre. paint the rim, then transfer it to the next rim & so on....

I'd post a picture but it was done before the invention of time...

how about some carboard with a curve cut in to the edge, and just hold it by hand and move it around the tyre to shield it as you go?

try puting some silicone spray on the tire but make sure you dont do the rims in it though haha you made need to make a cardboard cut out to cover the rim or wax and grease the rim before painting

Old wet towels
Old wet rags
Aluminium foil
wipe the tyres with thinners - then tape will stick. I've tape masked lots of tyres before - sticks no problem.

If you can't get tape to stick to the tyres, my guess is paint won't either.
or as suggested, don't bother with masking and just wipe them down with thinners afterwards.

Steve.

Post subject:  Re: NOB Question.. Spraying rims with tyre attached

use the card board trick and just keep moving it around, all you need is the flap off a box of beer, painted heaps of rims in the panel shop like this for car yards over the years, works a treat. dont even bother trying to mask it, the tyres are full of silicon so nothing will stick
