I have a 1988 DA21T suzuki super carry ute with an f10a Engine Ever since I bought it the starter made a horrible sound but it started fine and I never got around to looking at it.... cue now the starter spins but won't engage. Took it off and noticed the teeth are chewed out. After a lot of googling I'm struggling to find a replacment starter for a decent price but also not convinced whether they are going to work or not. It sounds like the f10a has an 8 tooth pinion but after counting mine it has 9... does that mean it has been replaced before and they have put the wrong one in? How do I work out what one is correct? Can I buy the 8 or 9 tooth pinion and just replace that? What other models use an f10a that I could search for a replacment?

Yeah the F10as in Sierras have 8 tooth starters. I don't know if super carrys are meant to be the same but I would imagine so.
You'll want to look at your flywheel teeth too, they will likely be quite worn.
All the below models with F8a and F10a engines take the same starter. You'll most likely find them under SJ410. LJ80 LJ81 SJ40 SJ410 MG410

Cheers, will get an 8 tooth then. flywheel is showing some signs of wear. Didn't really want to have to remove and replace it... that's if I cam even find one .

LJ80 LJ81 SJ40 SJ410 MG410 It is possible that you two are talking about different starters? Not sure about Super carry but the F8A Carry vans that had all had a starter motor that mounted beside the gearbox instead of beside the block like LJs and 1.0L Sierra's. Most likely because the motor is laying over in a Carry...... Hope this helps and I may have a F8A Carry starter that works? Greg

I have ordered one that suits an SJ410, SK410 F10a 8t CW direction... apparently from the ebay seller he said its the only one listed for that model...
not sure why mine had a 9t in it but can only guess it chewed out because of that...?
Can the flywheels be turned around or are they made to suit one direction?

I have had a chance to look into this more. on the starter motor the mounting holes are a different size so this will not even fit my 1988 F10A suzuki carry. I have a 5 speed gearbox if that makes a difference?
Inside to inside measurement of the mounting holes: on mine is 116mm new one is 102mm
Flywheel ring gear. Mine is 219mm ID New one is 211mm ID
Surely there's not different sized f10A flywheel and starter motors?

Sorted starter....I think... They sent me the wrong one and even after questioning them they said it was correct. I ended up working out it infact wasn't. Item im getting now is a Jaylec 70-8126 they sent a jaylec 70-8114
Still having issues on the flywheel front...
apparently my flywheel isn't the correct one so the ring gear doesn't fit.... not sure what others actually fit?
This is from my F10A Super Carry.... anyone know of what its from if its not for an f10a super carry?

Hey guys just an update.
Finally got everything sorted. The correct starter motor worked a treat. And my fly wheel was correct. Nfi what they were on about. I ended up turning it around and taking the edge of with a grinder.
