Hello folks, I need an engine for my 1998 Vitara - 2.0 4-cylinder J20A donk. Reconditioned or a good enough 2nd hand. Just bought the little Suzi (3 door) and love it, and it runs ok, but the motor is done, compression is very low, and can’t even get up my (steep!) driveway without a major struggle - in low range!@ Located Gold Coast, but can make plans to get from elsewhere. Also, if anyone has good advice for me, that would be great. Should I rather get the motor reconditioned? I have a quote of range $4.5k to $5.5k. TIA!

PS - does anyone know if a "Suzuki SX4 Engine Motor 2.0 L J20A Alloy Rocker Cover Type 2007-2009" would fit my Vitara (without needing mods)? Thanks!

No it won't, not without modification - the head, cams & electronics are different - you're limited to an engine from the same model (SV420) built between 96~98.

It MIGHT be possible to use the J20a from a 98~05, but those use a different cam position sensor, if your's is good, you could try swapping it over.
