i have had a 1L and a 1.3 and to be honest, i think the 1L is a better motor. it uses every ounce of power it can muster, and loves 2 b high in the revv range all day, and lasts for ever. i always felt my 1.3 made more noise than power.

my 1L had lockers front and back and no one could keep up. i LOVED that car.

when i had my 1.3, my girlfriend @ the time had a 1L and we had a drag, she got the jump @ the lights and i could not catch her.

and as for

i dont think so. the 1L i have sits on 100k's all day, and it is possible 2 fit a 5 speed box to it (i had one fitted) to take the sting off the tacho

when i buy a sierra again, i'll be specifically looking for a 1L.

Obviously on the road they are slow and you're limited to how far / K's you can do.. But apart from the extra power from the standard 1.3 is there much difference 4x4 wise that the 1lt suffers from? I'm guessing steep hills? Just curious on anyone that has run the 1ltr and the 1.3(+) and could critic the 4x4 performance? Cheers

The one litres go better off road than you'd expect... There is nothing that can't be overcome with the right gearing. I'd fit a 1.3 transfer* and some 4.9 or 6.5 gears... *You can fit gears to a 1.0 transfer if it has the 4wd switch.

hmm thats interesting. I'm pretty sure my transfer does have the 4wd light (all that means is lighting the little LED displays next to the ignition? Right?) The trans box needs a service so might look into swapping it with a serviced and geared up one for the orig one and extra cash in the near future. And look into the 5speed Cheers for the advice

yeah i dont think the 5sp was out of a standard 13. sierra. someone had already done the work and i pulled it out of a wrecked sierra. they said it was out of a maruti.. on the RHS of the steering colum, their should be a black box that sticks out. thats where my 4WD light is. its green back lit..

yeah thats the one. . Was told that the early carry van gearbox will do the job as the 5 speed. Had one lined up but missed out . You have to do some minor adjustments with the sump or something? Cheers for advice mate

I don't mind my 1 litre. Lacks a bit of go at 100km/h. If you get a slight rise in the road it starts to die. But off road it has enough power. My next mod might be 1.3nt diffs so I can get a locker.

to fit the 1 litre 5 speed carry van box you have to modify the gearbox cross member and shorten the jack shaft. thats what I have been told anyway, haven't done it myself, but I will once I find a box. there is nothing better then showing a big thirsty heavy footed patrol driver that a 1 litre zook can go as far if not further then it. as already said they love to rev, I know when my zooks not running right cos I can't get it to rev past 6grand!!!!! the only limitation will be if you fit larger tyres. 30's I had to drive it hard and 31's were impossible. I now have 30's with S1 gears and love it. long distances are only a limit if you let them be, I done frazer Island in a 4 day weekend and travelled 1000 km round trip in those 4 days, never once thought 'geez ive had enough of this'

Re: Long trips I have 215/75 15's on and on the speedo it shows 90kph on tomtom shows just over 80kph I dont really push her any faster as im not sure if it will take it long distance. There are a few places out of perth say 1 or 2hrs and Id be scared to drive at say 90/100kph for a hour or so then, give it a spirt 4wding.. Everyone I speak to does say they will take it! Hopefully going for a beach and dune run tomoz. so will report back and add some vids/pics in the right sections. Cheers for comments by the way!

I have a 1.0L ute and it easily sits on 100-110kph. Infact it can pull away from 1.3L when doing over 80 (prob due to the insane revs its doing ) A 5sp box is a good mod to do, but you will need 5:1 or 6:1 transfer ratios if you are fitting 30's or bigger, as you won't have the power to use your new 5th gear in high range otherwise. I had one of the first 1ltr Zooks in Perth back in the early 80's, the speedo only went up to 120kph, but i could easily wind it out past that ! And it was very quick from a standing start from the lights, surprised a few other cars and 4WD's back then When i used to work on the Laverton mine, 400km north of Kalgoorlie, i could easily sit on 110 or 120kph for hours, and i had all my tools and offroad gear in it, and a steel roobar... The 1ltr Zook had the highest power to weight ratio of any other 4WD, it used to float over sand, but had some trouble on rocks due to the stiff leaf axles... After i finished on the mines i traded in my 1ltr for a 1.3ltr JLX, i cant say i noticed anymore grunt onroad, but offroad, it did have a little extra grunt/torque than the 1ltr... The 1ltr Zook was the most reliable Zook i ever had !

used to know a bloke who fitted a single side draft SU carb off a range rover (rejetted of course) , that combined with extractors and and exhaust system it screamed it's head off could do 120km\hr

With all those goodies it would have gone alot faster than 120kph !
