| Post subject: | How do you RUF? |
Has anyone published a basic run down on doing a RUF conversion here? If so could someone point me to it? Do you have to move the spring hangers or extend the brake lines? I want articulation, clearance, and a softer more compliant and comfortable ride for my farm zookie that is never on the road but does several thousand km per year on rough paddocks and bush tracks. (All without mortgaging the property)

there are many ways to do it, the easy way to do it would be to get 2" extended shackels all round and redrill your rear spring hole back (cant rember how fare but someone on here will know ) and yes you will proberly need to extend your brake lines.
are you using std springs or lifted? |

put lifted rears in the back and use your old stock rears in the front. Re drill the rear mount back 25mm and up 10mm. Make a template so all holes are in the same spot. use an extended shackle (110mm hole to hole) and the diff will end up in the factory position. This will improve ride but to get more flex you need to run longer brakelines and longer shocks and raise the top shock mount. B4T |

If you redrill the spring mount back as has been suggested the bush in the spring will overhang the edge of the mount which will cause it to chop out. To do it properly move the mounts and don't use extended shackles. there is heaps written up on the forum about the pros and cons of all the ways that people do it. |

I am pretty sure I pioneered this method through sheer doginess and ran some of Bruces Bushes in 50 Duro (softer than he will make for most people) without a problem |

It seems to me the correct way to do a ruf and take advantage fo all the benifits would be to extend the chassis and move the shackle mount. by doing this you can set the correct shackle angle to allow full droop and a good ride . its more work to do like this but there are so many more benifits. cheers andrew |

I've been running for 18 months on the same bushes. No chop out. |

Yes asjr I agree. Each to their own. Some would say cutting and shutting the stock chassis and cutting off stock mounts is rough. Especially when the majority of people out there don't have the fab or welding skills to pull it off safely in the eyes of an engineer. I do agree with both of you that in a perfect world moving the mounts and extending the chassis is the best option for all RUFs. But in our not so perfect world I'd rather give someone a drill and some extended shackles over a welder and a sawzall. At least it can be taken back to a legal vehicle when its done with paddock duties. In summary, in my experience the rear bushes didn't chop out after a redrill.

Yeah that's true Hybrid I take your point Royce a big hammer is a legitimate tool, over the years I have had a lot of swings at the same area as shown on your avatar, in fact if you took a photo of what I was doing on Tuesday arvo this week it would have been just like your avatar (except with a shaved melon instead of long hair) |

In summary, in my experience the rear bushes didn't chop out after a redrill. A RUF can be done legally (yes in QLD too, thou pessimistic readers). Moving mounts, chassis extension, not the longer shackles though. Talk to a certifier. I know the person needs to know how to weld, but the owner could get somebody to weld for them. This is a long term plan of mine, to do it properly, however thats a long way off. My fixed end bushes don't chop out with my re-drilled rear mounts, I just murder the small end bushes slowly. I think the extended shackles have more to answer for here, and they are only 20mm extended. |

I have had my LJ project looked at and pre aproved, I have dont a chassis extension, and moved the mounts to fit 2" lifted RUF and CJ Springs on the back. So can be done legally. However in saying that, I also have my sierra with Carry rears up front, extended shackles and non redrilled rear mounts. This flexes crazy and rides nice and comfy. All this talk of half ruf, full ruf, mini ruf is complete crap. If your running rears up front then you have a RUF end of story. |

if you redrill the mount back 25mm and UP 10 mm the bush will still be inside the mount. Ive had my sierra like this for over 3 years now and i still havent chewed out any bushes. It flexes like mad and i run the stock rubber rear bush. |
