It's a little awkward but even I can lift it by myself

I usually pull the front driveshaft as well as the jackshaft, as it gives you more room to maneuver the box out. Pull the gear lever before you start too. If you still have the stock exhaust there is a bracket on the top of the cat. converter which can be a pain to get off, but if you undo that and disconnect the exhaust at the manifold flange that will give you more room to move too.

A 2" bodylift makes it a million times easier in my experience.

And don't forget the wiring on the firewall!! It's a pain to do while balancing the box on your head

Good tip!

Also, I usually drain the box before I pull it out, but you could probably use one of those plugs to stop the oil coming out the back of the box. In any case you need to address that if you don't want to be covered in gear oil!!!

Are you gay? Cos u must be reading in the closet? He said he is removing the gearbox not transfer! :finger:

And are you swapping the box while the car is on the ground? no jacks etc? Sorta an awkward position..

Sorry bluesuzy but I've got to agree on the gay call. :P I'm no tank and I find pulling the gearbox out to be a piece of piss. I'd go one further on shep and say its more like 20-25kg. I suggest you pull yours out while taping it just so we can get some respect back for you. Better yet come round and do mine so i can see it for myself and possibly throw a new rear main seal in :P

Now for the tech. Try cutting a small v slot in the front of your rear gearbox mount. There is like web on the back of the gearbox that is a pain in the arse if you don't cut the v in.

Hey a V is a good idea. I just took about 10mm off the front of the bracket.

You don't have to cut anything off Joe. It just makes it easier and I'm all about working smarter not harder........ Back when I had a bodylift it was heaps easier to get out. I only slotted the mount after going abck to standard body height.

P.S Blue my dick is massive.........ly dissapointing

I cannot figure out whats holding the gearbox in.

I've taken off/undone everything. I can only get it to slide along the studs about 1/4" away from the engine, and then it something hits and i cant get it out.
The only thing i can think of is the starter motor, but i can't see it hitting anything??

Post subject:  Re: Stupid Q

turns out i had to pull the starter off.
thanks anyway. Also had to pull the front drive shaft as bellhousing got stuck between it and the exhaust.

On a side note, having my jackshaft out, i just noticed that the input flange on the transfer has a bit of play... how much is normal? I can twist it about 3-4mm (along the circumference of the flange) before it 'takes up'.

Also, with the case in 4 and the front drive shaft disco'd, i noticed theres alot of play in the rear diff (backlash). I can twist the drive shaft back and foward somewhere between 1/8th and a 1/4 of a turn (1/6th?)... again whats normal here? would appreciate if someone could check on their car?

I had mine out 3 weeks ago and I got help with stabbing it back in but that is just becasue I like my back. But I could have done it myself. Now that was in a shop on a 2 post not on the ground.
And to add to that I didnt have to cut anything.

Post subject:  Re: Stupid Q

if you are doing it on the ground with no jacks etc. make sure the dowels (little cylinders) stay in the engine not the gearbox... hard lesson learnt yesterday. there is not much clearance but with a little effort (about 8hrs if like me you had no idea) and a bit of brute force it should come out. it"s not that heavy either, i'd say 25kg.
