anyone tried the new 8.1 transfer gears?
yes I am fully aware they are getting real low and all the associated stresses. but im needing a little more than my 6.5's give with the 34's,
another 20% reduction would be great and then i dont need to open my airockers and all the other shit.
so anyone? or am I going to be the test dummy?
cheers andrew

was going to say unless you running big tyres you dont need 8.1. have you though about diff gears?

did you read my post?
it clearly says I wish to not open the diffs if possible.
and I run 34's so yes the tyres are quite large.
yes diff gears would fix my gearing issues however I could sell my 6.5's in the case for near what the 8.1s are worth to import, hence near free gearing.
or I could spend at least 500 dollars plus to do diffs in which case I may as well rebuild them at the same time and these a grand please.

do you have a spare case for the 8.1 to go into?
correct me if im wrong but 8.1 will put more strain on the unis, diff and axles? if you use diff gears this will only add more strain on the axles?

Yes more strain all round including axles. Fitting shorter diff gears will put more strain on axles too.
Any change to any part of the gear train will result in a difference (usually more strain) to axles as they are the last link in the drivetrain.

They sound good if you want that big of tyres. What is the reduction in H??? If you do that big of reduction in the transfer and not doing anything with the diffs you would be putting all the stress on the transfer and not spreading it out over the hole drive train. I would be sure to be putting atleast a rock ring or some kind of help to keep the case intact. What kind of mounts are you going to run?

I already run a rocky road transfer arm setup with solid mounts bolted right through with 10mm grade 10 bolts its been good for two years through some bad shit.
im sure something will brake somewhere one day though.

Your really need more gearing? When I had the 1.3 in I had 4.9 Tranny and 4.57 diff gears and found it to be almost perfect. with 6.5s and 3.7s it would be close to the gearing I was running.
What made you think you need more mate?

my high range is nearly useless, the pissy 1.3 wont pull h4 on any decent hill im in 1st gear. granted there are 5 low range gear and belive me they all get a good workout but high range would be nice too
I do have a 16v 1.6 hanging from my shed roof but I'm in two minds as to weather I can be farked fitting it and all the wiring etc.
want to put it in for me Dan?

Man I dont know if you installed or had some one fit them for you. Have you seen how much you need to grind out of the case to fit the 6.5s I would hate to think of what you would have to do to get the 8.1 in. Out of intrest or a different idea for you. You would get more out of running a second transfer? With how tall you are running 34s you would have the room.
I had 33s up till a few weeks ago and I found the 6.5s to be good I can't imagin 34s would be to much different.
If you do get them please put up some pics of the install.
Let me know if you need a second empty case I have a few.

Mate this would be by far the best thing you could do. I have a mate that has the 1.6 he runs 35s n/t diff centers and 6.5s and has no problems
Jimbo on here has 37s on the 6.5 and a GTI motor and runs well.

I fitted my 6.5's and only ground 1mm out of a small section of the case.
Total area ground was less than a matchbox.
I've spoken to Sean at Lowrange and he said that grinding for 8:1's is only a tiny bit more.
I still don't know whether to go 8:1 transfer gears and 35's or keep the 6.5 transfer and fit 5.12:1 diffs and 35's.

I think the idea would be a combo of diff and trandfer gearing so as to spread the load a little through the drive train, them itsonly the axles that cop the lot
but as I said your spending and modding a lot of stuff to do it that way.
