I've recently had a intermitant "Check Engine" warning flash up on the dash. It doesn't usually stay on, coming on for a minute or two and then dissapearing. I've found it seems to appear most frequently at freeway speeds. No noticable difference in performance noted when light is on as opposed to off.

Using a guide Gus (Atari) very kindly gave me a while back, I shorted the relevant pins on the monitor plug in the engine bay and got the ecu to flash up what I assume is code No 13.

Pause.....One Flash.....Pause......Three Flashes......Long Pause.... cycle resumes.

Referring to the fault diagnostic chart, i assume the fault is as follows. Can anyone interpret into English? Wtf is it refering to? Or am I completely on the wrong track and it's something totally different?

Thanks in advance.
Stuey

& are you using E10? If you are , STOP IT!!
I get bucket loads O2 code`s when it`s the fuel to blame.

Hey mate,

I wouldn't say the engine was loaded as such, as it seemes to light when cruising with a steady throttle. Even changing up and down through the gears (ie revs increasing or decreasing) didn't change much. It seems to remain on until my speed falls down to 60-70kph or thereabouts. Like I say, its a little random and I cant get it to play up on demand. The only consistancey is that I've only had it light at higher speeds.

Should it be the o2 sensor, I still have the Bosche universal part # you gave me as opposed to buying the $$$! suzuki part. Where exactly did you order yours? Can any local parts shop get that kind of thing in?

Sorry bud, excuse my ignorance but what is E10? (I'm assuming a grade of fuel).

I usually fuel up on 95 premium from my local Gull servo. I try to avoid the 91 stuff where possible and I cant justify the 98 cost as any perfomance/milage gain is minimal.

Is this relevant?

Just googled E10. Ethanol based fuel.

In which case, no... I'm not fueling up on this stuff.

According to Gulls material info, product contains >90% gasoline.

REPCO will be able to order it in, it's a bit of a fidly job joining the wires of the aftermarket o2 sensor into the original wires as you can't solder them. it ccmes with a funky 4 wire joiner.

atari`s on the money & Suzuki o2`s as you say, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$`s.
E10 run`s to clean & the o2 thinks its running lean, so it richens up till it pings, Then drops off to lean again, over & over again, Ecu think o2 is faulty & o2 still thinks it`s running lean.

It`s only 4 wire`s to change over & thay react quicker to (aftermarket that is)

Thanks guys. Just to be sure, I'll run past Suzistore here, get them to plug in their diagnostic tool and confirm. According to their website $350 for an o2 sensor!!! Ouch! So a Bosch item will be the go if it is the case.

Other than wires, I assume its a straight swap?

I'll let you know how I get on.

bingo, remove all the heat shrouding on the exhaust to get to it easier, make sure you soak every thing with CRC or something first. mine has a body lift & i was able to get in from the inner guard on the LHS

Hi Stuey, Can you tell me how you got the flash code to come up?

My 4WD has exactly the same problem you described, engine light comes on, usually around high way speeds and then will eventually go off by itself. Sometimes it will do it a few times in a trip and sometimes it will never come on. I just got back from Kingscliff to watch the wrc and the light never came on so I thought "Great, a good run has fixed the problem" - then the other day it came back on again :(

I have played around with low and high octane fuels but havn't found anything common.

Please keep me posted with how you go.

cheers
Mike :)

Hey Mike,

Ping me an email address & i'll send you the info to get the codes out of the ECU & how to read them.

Cheers
Gus

For the record, mine turned out to be a faulty coil pack, not an oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor was throwing up the code, but is was caused by an incorrect burn in one of the cylinders due to the stuffed coil pack. If you still need the codes sent through, I can..... but I'm sure Gus will sort you out.

Hey Stuey,
Was it one of the rubber probes that failed or did the actual coil part fail? I've only had the probes die on me so far, I do have a spare coil & probe for a back up as I had a probe fail on me in the middle of the dunes down at beachport.

Actual coil pack was faulty (of course it had to be the more expensive of the two didnt it!?)

I bought an extra as a spare too (complete coil and probe) as I remembered your story about it failing down the beach.

Hrmmm I've noticed mine has flashed the light once or twice recently also - again only when doing highway speeds. Sounds like Ive got a faulty coil pack to look forward to...

Thread revival, almost 12 months later I finally got around to shorting that pin and getting the error code :D

Sure enough, I'm getting error 13 also (that said - it hasnt flashed in months).

Does someone have the Bosch part # they can give me for the universal o2 sensor? Couldnt find it in this thread of any other related ones.

cheers

I replaced the one my J20a with a universal Bosch O2 sensor, I'm guessing yours is a 4 wire heated sensor?

The part number was # 0258986507775 it was around $100 instead of $300+

Hope this helps.

I have just been through the 02 (Lambda)sensor hunt for my GV. Here is what I found.

OE sensor for V6 GV is a NTK (Same company who make NGK spark plugs) OZA 536-J1 this has been superseded by OZA 495-J2 ($85.60 veale auto parts)

Same sensor as above but from Goldy Suzuki $420

Universal $132 ( The universal require wire to be joined and original plug reused)

These are all Zirconia 4 wire heated sensors. Life expectancy ranges from 50K to 160K depending on size and type. O2 sensors do need checking as with spark plugs. They tend to start slowing down and not sending the signal to the ECM quick enough which results in incorrect fuel air mixture. I found with my sensor it had stopped sending any data at all so the ECM was leaving it on the Idle mixture. Which is why it was using more fuel than normal.
