Wondering the implications of not having the hot air pickup running off the extractors are? About to chuck some headers on my 97 coily and wondering if i have to weld on an outlet on for this hose or not... All the extractors ive seen dont seem to have somewhere for the hot air pick up and i've seen dyno read outs that show that the motor runs better without the hot air pick up when the extractors are on.. Cheers |

where the headers are at the top where the four pipes run off near the head, there is a tube that runs back around to the air filter, warms the air up to help when starting in the cold im guessing... dont know the configuration of the older sierras but mines got it |

I pulled off that hose, and the associated valve thingo near the air-box, when I lived in Cairns. Now I live in Tassie, and occasionally drive snow. It doesn't seem to have affected the engine performance. It might just take a little longer to warm up, that's all. Running a snorkle has had more effect I reckon. On a cold night, running at highway speeds, the engine does struggle to keep up to temperature. As for dyno figures |

i fitted extractors a few months ago i just took the hose off and blocked the end of the hot/cold valve with silastic no problems dont worry about it |

i might just put a hole in the extractors for it.. doesnt seem to do much harm either way though by the sounds |

if its to help with starting. what heats the extractors? surely trying to crank over a motor isnt going to get enough head from the extractors to warm the air box up |

Put a hole????? that will just create 1 fucker of an exorst leak!! weld a peice of pipe TO the extractors not INTO the extractors, you want hot air not co2 |

thats what i ment..i didnt mean literally put a hole haha... after all im only putting these extractors on as an excuse to buy them, to fix a matifold leak |

What ever you do don't put any HOLES in your extractors ,you don't need it ,throw it in the bin. Engines like cold air not hot air (more oxygen per volume or something like that) |

We have a winner It isn't there to help with starting when cold. My money would be on heating the intake air to help reduce emissions. |

lol good point.. obviously wouldn't help when starting up would just help the car warm up quicker i guess |

Quick tip if you want to remove the hot air flappy valve thingy. Block off the vacuum hose at the top of the air cleaner. Remove the plastic piece that contains the valve and replace it with a piece of aggie pipe (non slotted) fits perfectly. |

BALL cold air-motor oxygen, more oxygen more fuel (in efi) more burning fuel means more emissions The heat will help atomise the fuel. Better atomised fuel has a more complete burn making for reduced emmisions. |

yeh, I would'nt worry about it, they do fuck all. It's the first bit I pulled off mine and chucked in the bin when I got the car home for the first time |

I always thought it had something to do with the auto choke on the carby? But you learn something new every day… http://www.metrompg.com/posts/wai-test.htm But as the Sierra is a carbureted engine, there is no ECU?? I'm inclined to think that this may be what it's meant to do… 1. WAI possibly contributes to marginally better fuel vaporization in cold weather. 2. WAI may contribute to quicker engine warm-up, reducing (to a small degree) fuel consumption between a cold start and normal operating temperature |
