I posted this on outers but thought i'd put it up here to make sure i get the full range of expertise.

Ok i know a couple of guys use the 4 speed auto aw4 box. What i would like to know is.

1. how do you go with the auto off-road seeing as it isnt really gear selectable i.e always starts in 1st low. If you have low range crawler gears does this cause any issues when you would normally select to start off in a higher gear in a manual.

2. I have heard there are some people who are using a simple switching setup to change gears in these things using power to the solinoids.

What i would like to bring up is the possibility of setting up a sportshift style config. Where it drives normal on road like a normal auto. Flick a switch on the dash and beable to use the shifter to "select gears"

thoughts?

this is what i want to do with mine, there was a site 'aw shifting' that offered a control box to allow this type of setup, but the guy has stopped making them.. there are a few vids on u tube of vehicles running his system, just search for aw shifting.

That looks really quite simple. Might be challenging getting to stop acting getting it to switch between modes is all

It's a bit of a trek for you but MV auto's does some cool shit with the late model jap import stuff. just google MV automatics & it comes up in heaps of forum discussions & is well known in the Drag racing scene. A few mates have had him build auto's up & they are awesome, one of the most impressive was a 3.0l TD auto pootrol that he built up & kitted

mine has that. when i'm offroad and i want to start in low gear i put it in 'L'. when i want to go a lttle faster i put it in '2', and when i want to go faster again i put it in 'D', its work the other way also :wink:

if you ever plan on engineering the vehicle down the track, and the electronic auto is not wired up as per factory you may find it will not pass.

Actually yeah i missed that

So i guess you would switch the main power off to the TCU

and then use manual switching. once you were done you would power the tcu back on.

I want to be able to select the gear it starts off in.

I will be hopfully running duel transfers and if i am climbing hills etc i wont nessessarily want the low low low gearing of first gear

I don't want to derail your thread Tanshi but this info should at least allow people that want to run one of these tranmissions but dont want to use the factory ECU. Eg, putting one on the back of a carby engine. Shouldn't it?

Twitchy should be along shortly i'm sure :lol:

yeah that should allow you do run an auto with out a TCU.
mightmouse from outers does the very thing.

Im going through the jimny FSM to try and figure out if you can do this with them too.

I can't see why not. What engine are you putting the Jimny box behind BTW?

At the moment i have itbehind a baleno 1.6 but if i can get this vit 4 speed in, i wanna see if i can get it to work behind a standard 1.3 or similar

You've got me all interested now, so i'll have to see if the 4 speed that I have stashed away is still there. It shouldn't be too hard to get it mated up to a GTi block.

Well i have had a look at the wiring diagrams, and it should be pretty easy to set up the manual shifting on the jimny box to make it work with the carby motors using the orginal position switch

Does the AW4 have a lock up torque converter. Could probably control it with the megasquirt if your putting it back in damo.

Yeah i've just been looking at that this morning, will keep it in mind as the GPIO/MegaShift project moves forward. It can be done currently using a stand alone MS2 though.

I would have thought with the MSNS Extra there would be enough customisable outputs to control the auto.

I though so too, but it seems there's a bit more to controlling an auto than I thought originally. I'm a bit ignorant when in comes to slushboxes :?

There must be a few peeps around with these boxes in Vits? Can any one get me a length from the bellhousing face to the rear output ? just need this to figure out if i can fit one
