Had to fix the el-cheapo winch today. The clucth gear inside the gearbox had developed a burred edge on the groove that the freespool handle slides in. The clutch gear is ment to slide inside the housing and lock inplace over a fixed gear. The bur had jammed the clutch gear in the housing and left me in freespool. I drilled and tapped 3 holes in the back of the housing to force the gear into the engaged position so i could still use the winch as it was needed on sunday. Now today i went and saw the nice blokes at Ironman in clayton with my stuffed winch gearbox and we figured out that an ironman winch gearbox will bolt up to the cheap winch. The gear on the end of the cable drum and the bolt spacings on the spreader bars are the same. The only difference is the gear in the end of the ironman box is retained by 2 small screws and if left inplace will require a 2mm spacer put on the end of the spreader bars. But if you remove the 2 screws it will bolt up . The gear on the end of the barrel will hold the gear inplace without the 2 screws as it has a circlip on it. None of this prob makes sense to anyone unless they have pulled a winch apart before. but i thought i'd share . Massive thanx to the ironman boys for their time and Knowledge.. B4t |

the cheapo i had was bought about 2 years ago. it had a one piece gearbox not a 3 piece like the ironman box. i bought it before all the new cheap winches flooded the market so it cost me about the same as what an ironman winch would now. it has worked well up untill last week and has had to pull several patrols out of bad situations. Its good to know that you dont need to buy a complete winch if the cheap ass ones die. B4T |
