Does anyone know how the interior light is wired to turn on when the doors open?

From the day i bought the car the "open door sensor" never worked.
Then one day i took it offroad and basically shook the crap out of the car. When i got home the sensor started working (though only for the drivers side door), turning the light on when the door was open and off when it was closed.
Unfortunately, another offroad trip shook the wiring back to it's original (not working) position.

I've taken the light apart and tested the gotten a basic idea of how it is meant to work. From what i've seen there is only earth when the door is open and this disappears when it is closed.
I can tell the Earth wire is not currently attached to anything and have absolutely no idea what i need to join it to???

Anyone here have the answer?

Ok, the door switch is essentially just a piece of metal which contacts the body when the door opens. This earths the switch.... After going offroad this area fills up with gunk and dirt/mud etc so the switch no longer has a very good earth. To rectify this, remove the switch (pull it out, just be careful about bending the tangs), clean behind it and then put it back in.. should work then!

As felix said check the connections on the switch (near the door are working correctly). Its similar function to the handbrake switch.

My 91 soft top
Stock wiring is white for +, and black for earth (triggered by door opening).
One screw earths the unit when the button is in the always on postion.

The black and white wires, have bullet type connections near the light (as you probably know), and another set of bullet connections near the driver seat belt retractor.

The black wire continues in the body, and is easily found next behind the driver side speaker, where it is near the switch on the door.

Also check the wiring, mine did a similar sort of thing and took me a little while to figure out was going on. turns out someone had fiddled with the wires.

In behind the speaker is another set of bullet connections on the black wire. The wire which goes to the light, has two female bullet connectors one for passenger side and one for driver. (In stock form there isnt a door open switch on my sierra).

If you dont have a passenger side door open switch, make sure there is only 1 wire going into the female bullet connectors.
