Post subject:  lj50 tailshaft
does anyone know if these tailshafts are in the right way or if they will even go in the wrong way
also any ideas as to where i can get a rear output shaft seal for the tc

It doesn't matter which way they go in, so long as the yolks line up.

would it be a significant vibration if the yolks were'nt lined up ?

Yes. The bigger the angle the uni is working on the more suseptible it is to vibrations. You need to set them up so they cancel each other out. Have a read through Here

8O I prefer the rubber boot section up higher near the transfercase to help get it out of the mud and crud... also up ther it allows the water to drain out.
That second pic has some wacky angles on the shaft!

thanks mate it was a good read
i wont pretend i understood it all but ive been chasing a vibration in the 50
and both mine were out of alignment so fingers crossed this may solve the problem
i would go and try it now but ive pulled the handbrake and rear seal out or the tc so will have to wait

its pulled off the transfer so i can get to that bloody seal which was pissing out oil

From the Suzuki LJ50 manual:

"Match marks are provided on the slip-on spline connections. Inserting the splined end into the splined bore without regard to the match marks can be a possible cause of noise or vibration of the propeller shaft. Be sure to index the marks."

Pop the boot off the shaft and clean away the grease, and you'll see the marks. The boot end towards the transfer case is the right way to fit the shafts.

303zuke you have posted a scanned pic from the manual showing index marks, perhaps you could also scan and post a pic for Kenso showing what Scrawn was saying about the yolks lining up. If you have the original manual there is a good pic on page 154 (my scanner is kaput)

303zuke and Hutch are correct, from factory the short end of the tailshaft with the female spline and rubber boot is connected to the transfer box.

Kenso, if you're wondering why your rear shaft doesn't look like the one in the manual, it's because yours is from an LJ80, built bigger for "more torque"!

mine were both out so all your help is appreciated
once i get hold of a seal for tc I will let you know if vibration is gone
