have a 97 vitara 2 door manual J20A engine, 140000ks, has a surging problem between 2500 and 4000 rpm, have changed plugs, fuel filter, checked all vac lines and cleaned MAP sensor with contact cleaner and it still surges. the engine light has come on a couple times, but then disappears after a few minutes, car is averaging about 350ks per tank on fuel which i think is pretty poor for 55 litres. could it be the coil packs or the O2 sensor, any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks nathan |

Hey nathan97zook, Have you been able to pull the codes from the ECU? I have attached a word doc that will give you the information to read the codes, just use a paperclip to bridge the 2 terminals. It could be either the o2 sensor or the coil packs, pull the coil packs + probes & check to see if there is any white "tracking" marks from where the spark is jumping. Let us know how you get on. |

Initial thoughts would be o2 sensor too |

when I had the o2 sensor fail, it was just throwing the error code & producing shit fuel economy. the coil pack was more of a miss, typical of a spark jumping. |

I had a V6 4runner that blew a head gasket. It never ran properly after that, used to have a slight surge on cruise. I never proved it but I suspected the o2 sensor took a gulp of coolant, I sold it pretty quickly after that |

Hmm, if it has an auxillary air valve/idle control solenoid have a look at that, it may be going a bit nuts and opening up when it's not meant to. Poor fuel economy could be due to the unmetered air entering causing the o2 sensor to read lean, then constantly trying to richen it up. Or it could just be faulty all together! Check the fault codes, or you can also check the o2 sensor by plugging an AC voltmeter to it and see what it's doing. You can also buy o2 sensor testers... they're pretty nifty. |

check the coil pack probes as these are a know weak point. TPS & Idle control solenoid are located on the inlet plenum if I remember correctly. try www.suzukiinfo.com |

yeah i changed the spark plugs last night, the probes looked pretty average, i a little perished, i seperated them from the coils and cleaned them and the springs with contact cleaner, it made a little difference, but its still there. TPS & Idle control , what should i check |

not 100% sure, i'll have to check out the manual & see what the story is. pull the error codes & let us know what they are. |

the engine light has come on a couple times, but then disappears after a few minutes, Are you sure it`s a MAP sensor, atari what`s your`s?? I was looking at a J20a today & it had a MAF sen!! MAP is Manifold Absolute Pressure.. MAF is Mass Air Flow, map is very reliable, where as Maf is a piece of shit, If you have sprayed contact cleaner into a MAF you`ve fucked it... By the symptom`s I would have to go Maf if that is what it run`s. This one was a Gv tho............... |

TPS you'll have to look up which pins have continuity at idle and WOT (wide open throttle) and which ones should be closed/increasing at partial throttle. Depends what type it has, I'm guessing it would have a potentiometer type so should be pretty straight forward if it is 2 pins... Idle control solenoid... take it out and give it a squirt with some carby cleaner first. I'm not totally convinced that it could be this as you say idle is ok? As others have said, check the o2 sensor first.. it is very easy to check honestly, just get your multimeter on AC and probe it, see what happens. Also, as said above if you have sprayed stuff into your MAF sensor it is more than likely buggered, however I am unsure if it will bring up a fault code... |

Maf won`t throw a code but the o2 rich will flash up, also seen multiple misfire codes when Maf is faulty. |

nego it's on the throttle body/inlet plenum so i guess it a MAP sensor. |

cant see why contact cleaner would stuff the maf, as its a cleaner that evaporates instanly and leaves no residue. |

yeah, maybe.... although Stuey had the o2 error codes come up & it was a faulty coil pack! did you check the coil probes for "tracking" marks, can you see if any sparks have been jumping? Universal o2 sensor is Bosch part # 0258986507775 about $90 instead of $300 from suzuki. |

have a read thru this one. http://www.auszookers.com/index.php?nam ... pic&t=6451 the o2 sensor has an adapter plug thingo to join the wires, as you can't solder the wires. this is the only photo i have at work of the adapter thingo.
edit it doesn't show the adapter at all.... i'll have to see if i have a better photo |

just called repco, they have a bosch 0258986504 universal listed for j20a 3 wire for $142, or the code you said have the 0258986507 for $96 which is the 4 wire sensor so i guess i will get the 1 you said for $96. |

it's a 4 wire o2 sensor, that you need & it's the one I am running. parts places are known to have the wrong part numbers listed. |

No activity detected can be a lot of thing`s, Fuel pressure to low or high, bad connection in the harness, Shit fuel !!! O2 code may have come up, but O2 may not be the cause!!!! Just means O2 is out of range. I`d like to see a flow chart for this P1034 as some bugger has taken my cd rom from work... Are you 100% sure it is a Manifold Absolute Pressure system?? If this car came to me the 1st thing I would look at is fuel pressure & work from there.. |
