| Post subject: | onboard air and tanks? |
Just after ideas, on what guys have done or what they're running? I'm thinking of mounting my maxair somewhere and adding a small tank. Also would air lockers be fine to run off a tank? I saw this a few years back and saved the pic.
A skinny tank underneath the car would be great, with an outlet either side to pump up eachside. Chop |

I saw a guy that used his rock sliders as an air tank. I thought that was a pretty ingenious idea. Anything dual purpose is good in my books. Not sure on the exact details how it was done, I presume it was a similar setup as the picture, but he had an air line fitting at the end cap of the slider, and used it for the air locker's and simply connected a hose for tyre inflation and even use air tools. |

yeah you can pretty much use anything for a tank, as buzzbox said, ive heard of people welding up the tubes in their bull bar and using that. 4wd shops do sell small air tanks, ive got about a 1 litre one which ive used for years. i found an old fire extinguisher on a job site which is nice and long and thin which will fit perfect under the zook.
dont know that i would want to go much bigger than that on a small compressor as it would take too long to pump up if you wanted to run airlockers in a hurry. you need a tank to run the lockers..any size will do. the easiest way to set it up would be to grab a compressor loom and pressure switch from arb. also add in a pressure relief valve (i got mine from pirtek) and a non return valve? to stop the compresssor always being under load (also from pirtek) |

ive got an ebay compressor. I wanted air tanks so searched ebay and found a heap of air compressors. I got one and just threw away the compressor. |

I use a Viair 460 compressor and an air tank I got from Bunnings.. Compressor pumps tank to 110psi and I can turn the locker on & off all day (30 times or so) and still have 80 psi in tank so the compressor only really has to run to pump tyres up. Viair 460 is rated at 1.66CFM @ 100% duty cycle.
Bunnings recharge tank.. $49 complete with gauge, pressure release & Schrader valve so it is easily filled at a servo if needed. Pic shows old Ebay crap compressor.

just a thought on air tanks i had a 20L compressor tank running off a black ox compressor with a one way valve it used to take bout 4mins to fill to 100psi it worked very well it took two fills to pump up 33's tho the compressor was running for to long at each time and it got to hot and occasionally the hose blew off (a pain when using diff locks) so i suggest a small 5L LPG bottle or fire extinguisher with a pressure switch would be the perfect cycle for the compressor and give you max air to be able to blow water out of fuel lines, a long enough burst of air to blast tyres on the bead when they fall off and dust out of air filters if you only used a 1 or two LTR bottle i know it would piss me of standing around waiting for air to build up and wouldnt give the compressor enough time for a break, you may as well use a long air line coz it would have the same volume. |
